    On the board for 2014

We had the new years bash at home this year with some family and close friends.

My Sister and her Husband were down from AKL for the Christmas break and I had floated the idea of getting him out in search of his first deer.....He was super excited so plans were set for new years day, what could go wrong?

After a bit of a night on the booze we headed away from CHCH after lunch time for a evening hunt, still feeling a little under the weather.

He had the opportunity for a shot at one deer which he clean missed. After a bit of banter and bull s*#t we sat down for a breather. I did say that one shot won't really stir up the area too much especially with the winds gusting at extreme force. Low and behold but 10 mins later 3 deer walk out on a face 500mt away.
A quick steam up a wee ridge and we are now at 420 meters away and not able to get any closer.....enter the Tikka 7mm Rem Mag, Leupold VX6 scope and shoota app.

A quick range finder check of the deer, shoota app calculation, dialing in the scope, bipod adjustment and we are in action. God I love this new found style of shooting with long range shots made "easy". BOOM, the deer disappears. After a quick discussion we opted for taking the shortest route to the deer by crossing a steep creek and attempt some bush bashing to break free into the tussock on the other side. What a friggin joke, bush lawyer, matagori, gorse! The legs took a hiding.

Anyways we got to where we thought the deer last was and sent the almighty dog on a search mission. 42 seconds later and a bush is vibrating with excitment with my labs tail sticking out and indicating that he had found the deer.

High 5's followed with the usual formal hand shake and a pat on the back and my Brother in law had nailed his first deer. What a cool evening out!
