    Boys weekend in the sounds.

A long time in the planning this trip and I hoped for decent weather and was not disappointed.

Members of the party were myself and my son the Wifes freinds son of similar age,my best mate and two of his permitted pig dogs.

I had paid for and booked out the Godsif/Matai bay hut for a couple of nights so with friday taken off work and school we packed some(farken lots) gear and headed for Duncan bay/Tennyson inlet.

    Looking back into Duncan bay

We were an hour or more ahead of Shane so got to the hut and unloaded mountains of gear then shot back to the ramp with perfect timing to flatten some chop and lead him and the dogs into base.

    Godsif bay and the hut

Typing on the phone sucks so will just photo bomb from here.

Good trip, the boys(all of them) enjoyed. Your doing a great dads job VC. I spent 21/2 hours last night watching dancing, my two grand kids featured! The little ones make you laugh, but I was a bit danced out by half time! The girls were excited getting flowers from nana and pop at the end and that’s what counts, memories!!

The boy caught one about 20cm long which I managed to roll the hook out without even lifting it out of the water to release and my mate got a decent 45-50cm one on and lost it at the boat would have been good for tea.
I have never really fished the sounds and took no fresh bait only salted and no burly as my intention was to catch a feed only and try and find a legal kingy.
the sign I saw on the sounder in 20-30m I am pretty sure was snapper but they just were not hungry for anything I had to offer, I caught livebaits and sent em down in hope of kings or a big snapper but was rewarded with barracuda after barracuda.
Trolled kingy lures at the most uneconomical speed possible around mussel farms and every point and island in range one evening and got a grand total of nothing.
At least the gurnard were plentiful and easy to catch.
I mostly stayed away from the coast and shallow water to try and avoid blue cod as of course you cant keep them at this time of year but the one time I got a bit close the boy got the biggest blue cod I have seen....even including Fiordland charters!I got it back in as quick as possible but estimate 7-8 pound....it fought like a snapper! and then another two around 45cm and that was it I had to move.

Yep right up to it on big high tides and underneath it if there is any sea with it!
The Matai bay hut trust have raised the hut to deal with flooding as well as decking and walkways....drift wood piles up at the wood box BEHIND the hut
It is a bloody nice tidy hut in a neat spot, also has the best (relatively clean, not over full, hardly even smelled bad for a shitter)long drop I have ever used
