In late October I finally finished 2yrs of distance learning through the open polytech. It was a struggle managing work, a young family and still trying to have some sort of life. Satisfying to have completed my diploma.
First trip was a week after finishing, went for a 3 day walk with fellow forum member who I also happen to work with. Saw a lot of deer and pigs, I shot a nice stag from lying in my tent on the first evening and then my mate shot one through my tent on the last evening. Mine was 300mtrs and mates was 250mtrs.
Next trip was 3 weeks ago, took a family member out for 2 nights hunting and trout fishing. Was a terrible trip in terms of fishing, not a single trout was seen in 3 days. First time in over 15yrs of visiting this valley that I have seen this river with no trout. Did manage a nice yearling. Saw a few deer, had a steering contest with a stag which he won. Just couldn't get a head on him due to the bush, he was only 30mtr away. Shot the yearling through some toitoi at 20mtrs.
Then on Tuesday just been decided to sneak out after work with a work colleague. He is a relatively new number, he has only got a couple of deer. As he hadn't sighted his rifle properly after a new scope attached we decided that anything over 50mtrs I would shoot. He knew how a far out it was at 50 so would be day to compensate. Ended up seeing 3 spikers and a barren hind. Jason was super excited when we spotted the first one at 730pm. We needed to get closer as I ranged him at 1200mtrs, we closed the distance to 500mtrs when I pointed out above and to the right were 2 more and what's more their location was going to make for a nicer retrieve. So ducked over the knob out of sight and closed the gap even further. The wind was not nice, swirling all over not strong just unpredictable. Crawled through the head high grass to a better spot to shoot from, 300mtrs was the distance. The deer were looking in our direction but thankfully still relaxed, I knew I didn't have long though. I dialed the scope and settled the x on the top 3rd of his shoulder, squeezed off the shot and he fell instantly, coming to rest on a bush 20mtrs below him after rolling. My rifle is unsuppressed so I got a nice surprise when the smaller spike ran 20mtrs and stopped, okay then let's see what happens here. I settled the x on the base of his neck and squeezed off the shot and number 2 collapsed in a heap and came to rest on a bush just below him. Was pretty stoked to take 2, my mate was grinning like a Cheshire cat. Finally made it home at 115am Wednesday morning. Rather shattered the next day as I was up for work at 0530.
All in all I have been making up for the limited hunting I have been doing. Plans are on for another after work mission this week, weather permitting as it looks a bit damp the next couple of days.
Really stoked with the 200gr ELD X bullets my mate helped me sort out. Have shot several animals from 30-690mtrs and all have been bang flop really impressed by these.
Cheers for reading.
