Thread: Early New Years Hunt with a visiting mate

A mate from the mainland came up on new years eve for a week.

A couple of months ago while carrying out a big trophy fallow buck he slipped in a creek and smashed his relatively new scope.

The scope was sent away via the retailer here in the bay it was purchased thru and a new replacement was sent back.

So while he was up i fitted the scope for him and on Jan 2nd we hit the range and zeroed it and validated to 400 yds, then we carried on up to the foothills of the ranges for an evening hunt.

We staked out a good clearimg positioning ourselves to suit the wind and sat back and waited.....

Just as we were starting to get a bit restless at 7.45pm the clock struck 'deer o'clock' and the first deer was sighted coming out for his evening munch.

After identifing it as a nice fat tasty spiker (the perfect lucky invitee to my next BBQ) i quickly inserted a 150gr SGK into tbe base of his neck from no more than 70 yards, down he went.

We headed over to the deer and i told my mate to bring his rifle. As we approached the spiker we see another spook off the bottom end of the clearing that we hadnt seen. Damn it buggered that up i thought.

With more than 1 hour of good light left, we decided to whip the guts out of him and prop him open with a stick to cool off and we would head back to where we were sitting and see what else may come out.

We walked straight thru the middle of the clearing back to sit down, literally the second we got back, my mate indicates hes seen another, i look to where hes looking and see another deer about 60 yards away looking straight at us.

Nick quickly released a freedom seed and i see the fat young deer get a bad case of the wobbles and topple over....another guest to my BBQ,

A couple of happy hunters with heavy packs full of prime veni and another couple of grass theives eliminated.
