    Factory Rifle Bedding jobs

    G'Day Fella's,

I recently had job to replace a Factory trigger with a new Timney replacement.
This was on a Win Mod 70 Classic Stainless Synthetic (.270Win).
When I removed the barreled action from the stock, it was obvious, things were not to good!
This last image, is of my own identical rifle (but in 7mm Rem Mag) and with the Factory "Hot Glue Gun" type bedding method.
The Pillar Bedding job, was my after market effort!

Now, here is how the customers rifle came apart!

As you can see, the Bedding Compound material, came out with the barreled action!
Also, please note the amount of rust (the red, golden & brown coloured marks) between the bedding material and action and else where!!!

Stainless Steel Yes, Rust Proof No!!!

    Doh!

Bloody hell! I do note a lot of people who show their bed jobs on here and elsewhere do not clear out the bottom of the recoil bar reccess? I always have as it has no intended bearing surface and found it can effect an otherwise good bedding job.

    G'Day R93,

Yes that is how you should bed any rifle action where the front action screw, threads into the action body!
With actions like Mauser, Brno/CZ, older Sako and Howa type centerfire actions, where the front action screw threads into the bottom of the recoil lug.
The bottom of the recoil lug needs the make full contact, with the bedding at the bottom of the recoil lug recess!

Given this and the above images, my Win Mod 70 7mm Rem Mag rifle, consistently shoots 1/2" to 5/8" groups!!!
R93, I wonder how much the rubbery like flexible nature of the Winchester (and Browning) bedding material, has to do with this???

    Doh!

Good point on anchored recoil bars. Not sure on the rubbery stuff. Just typical factory cost cutting IMHO, but if it usually works..........Some old 77 Poo-gurs are a pain to bed.
I like simple two contact type actions with out having to worry about tang lift etc.

    G'Day R93,
You and me both, on All counts!!!

When I get a chance, I will post a photographic "How To" bed a rifle on this forum.
I have taken most of the images, just need to get a basic plan of approach in place.

Further to bedding a Win Mod 70's.....
Whilst I tighten the front and rear screw firmly, I actually place a small amount of Loctite 222 on the threaded portion of the middle screw, then tighten this screw until it is just barely tight, then back it off from 1/4 to 1/2 a turn!
This keeps every thing in place but stops the middle screw from bending the action and effecting the bedding!
    Works for me!!!

    Doh!

    G'Day Fella's,

Probably nothing KG.........other than the images are of Hunting Rifles.
The words that accompany The Magazine title says: Stories, Articles and photo essays by members....no mention of it being an exclusive hunting stories area.

    Doh!

It is under the heading of Hunting though. No biggie though. The moderators can move it if they want to.
