Thread: Fallow spot and stalk

Yesterday I decided that my son William and I would go sit on the side of a hill and wait to see if a deer walked out. I knew that people do this kind of thing when they have seen sign on the ground or had been told that deer had been coming out in a certain area. Not really just picking the back of a farm almost at random and sitting there and waiting. However, this was my plan. I did know that a farmer had spotted deer on the back of his place about 3km away down the same ridge. His farm was closer to large chunks of bush but maybe some had come down further?

We sat down, it was really warm and the wind was blowing the right direction as we scanned around the area. On the right was a ridge which was covered in bush. In front of us was the farm we were hunting and to the left more patchy bush and loads of goats.

We were only there for 10 minutes when I couldn't believe my eyes, as if on cue a deer started picking it's way down through the bush and towards the grass on the farm. I quickly figured it was too far for a shot but saw that if we backtracked down behind the spur we were on and came back further to the right we would not be seen. We sneaked in and then belly crawled to the top of the hill that was providing our cover. I took a look through the scope. It still looked way to far away. Then I realised why, I dialed my scope from 3 to 9 and then had another look. Ahh that is better.... hold on, there are two deer now. I knew how much bullet drop there would be using my superformance ammo so lined up the first one waiting for it to get side on. They were slowly walking away from me to begin with. Finally a shot presented itself I thought, don't flinch just slowly squeeze. The first one dropped where he stood. When I re positioned the scope the second one was still there wondering what the heck had just happened to it's buddy. I lined him up and gently squeezed the trigger allowing for exactly the same drop as the other deer. He ran off and looked like it was a clean miss. The rest of the story is explained on video.
