Thread: Family stuff

Thursday night my son and grandson and I went for a lads night out.
In the evening 14 year old James got his 3rd deer with me which was a nice Fallow spiker at 200 odd yards - with "his" Sako A7 which is actually "mine". Nice high shoulder shot. Its a great set up for a boy with an 18" barrel and shooting 120grn NBTs.
Craig then got a Fallow spiker too.

The next morning James slept in and Craig and I were off at 5am.
I soon spotted a Red and 3 Fallow in the same gully about a KM away, so we made a bee line for them. As we staked in Craig dropped back to video the shots and to keep out of sight of a young hind up on a ridge. I got to within about 100 yards and a young velvet stag was all I could see so I gave him a 160grn 7mm in the shoulder (or there abouts). He bolted and 5 other deer appeared and picking what I thought was the same stag I let rip at him running at about 150 yards and hit him which made him stagger and stop which allowed me to get in a finisher.

I then looked back to where the action had started and bugger me there was the original stag I fired at upside down. He had only gone 50 yards. Then looking back at the 2nd one through my binos I could see that his velvet was better than what I would usually shoot. Oh well, shit happens, and they are still making them.

Mean while 3 Fallow were trotting off but they were quite safe - I had one more deer than I really wanted anyway (it turned out that the cocky accepted one for sausages so it urned out ok).

So Craig walked back to camp and packed up and collected their Fallow while I attended to the 2 Reds. By the time James arrived I had all of the legs and bits and pieces humped up onto a knob where he could carry then down to the quad he had nervously driven down (yup, this was a quad assisted mission). Nervous is ok, because nervous is safe.

When we got back to the woolshed my cocky mate was wanting us to go and shoot a Fallow in some young trees that I had planted for him...he had seen it that morning...but that can wait until next week







It was great having Tilly back on the hill with me after her enforced month off after dislocating her hip. She coped really well but is looking a bit sorry for herself this morning. The 2 Reds were her 150th and 151st deer we have shot together.
