Finally!!
I got back into bow hunting in 2020 and managed to get a boar just after Christmas that year. Since then it has been crickets, shot at a deer in March 2021, then no shots at animals since. I’ve been mainly hunting deer as goats are non-existent in Canterbury.
This last week we have been looking after a farm at Kaikoura so I have snuck out for a few hunts in between feeding animals. Took a few days but finally tracked down some goats.
I saw them from about a K away and was moving down a farm track in their direction when I heard a bleat below me. Looking over the edge I saw a billy sitting under a tree at 38 yds. Stepping back I nocked an arrow, ranged him then drew back and bracketed him between the 30 and 40 yd pins. Most of my form went out the window, the shot was good for elevation but a bit too far right, took out his jugular rather than a lung shot. He only went 20yds though.

After I shot him I saw another billy further down the ridge. I got within 20yds but he moved off before I could get a shot. I headed back up to the black goat and sorted him out. After that I made my way back up to the track to head after the original goats. Nearly back at the track I heard a bleat to my right and saw a grey Billy standing front on at 20yds. We stood and watched while I nicked another arrow, drew back and shot. I didn’t have time to range, but guessed 20yds, which I confirmed after the Billy took off. He went a surprising distance , 82m, with a frontal shot. There was a very easy blood trail to follow.

Well done @stug thats great practice for when you get onto the next deer, if you can hit that target you will be confident hitting the bigger animal.

@gonetropo I like it, but I haven’t shot anything else in 30 years. Mathew at Arrowhead archery in Darfield will have a few different bows your wife could try.
