After hunting for about an hour i heard two stags fighting a couple of hundred yards off. I sat, looked and listened for five mins but the sound wasn't repeated. The wind and cockies weren't in favour of a closer look so I continued on an arc hoping to catch up with them further on. Sparring this time of year I knew they'd be young but any animal was a good animal when it's your first muzzleloader red deer and I wanted some meat anyways.
Long story short I was glassing this opposite face next to a tree and as I stepped out from beside it I saw what was hidden behind it, a young stag 10 pt later ranged at 60m directly facing me. With no time for anything I chucked up the BP put the open sights on his throat and pulled the trigger. Once te smoke cleared there he was down on the spot. I managed to get some footage of his little 6 point mate.
After caping him out and breaking down the meat I was headin out on the first trip with cape and rifle thinking I should reload just in case but then I brushed off the idea and kept walking. As I get to the edge of the bush bugger me a good ten and a BIG 12-14 not 120m away. But my hands were full, the gun was empty and I was happy so I saw them trot off for another day.
I'll be back next weekend trying for that big boy but in the meantime I'm still wrapped with this guy and he's going to take an equally proud place in my trophy room next to my biggest of heads.
I prefer meat in its original packaging
