Well fellas I mentioned before the GC's I have met on here that have helped me with all things hunting, from, advice on rifles, calibers, helping me reload, stalking, to where to hunt and allowing me to tag along on hunting trips. With out naming names I am sure you are all aware of who you are.
As I 'm still relatively new to the hunting game all help and advice is greatly appreciated. What I lack on experience I make up with enthusiasm and those who have hunted with me will testify that I am usually the first one up and the last one back to the hut at night..
However this story pretty much sums up the generosity of hunters and the hunting community.
So here goes me and my Uncle leave South Auckland for a spot in the Ureweras where we have been before, where we have seen animals but been unlucky not to take a animal ourselves yet.
After a short walk to the hut we hunt high and low and for 2 days of full on hunting. We were rewarded with nothing except for fresh sign. Decision time do we stay or move on to a new area, the decision was made get up early morning stalk then head to the next hut to get an afternoon hunt in.
Next day morning hunt , nudddy , nothing less sign than the day before. So off we hump 2 1/2 hours to the next hut....
Bugger the hut has someone there already on close inspection it looked to be a sole occupant, and possumer hopefully a GC and not a retard..... Lets just say it turns out this young man was a an A Class GC.
We had a quick feed and go out for an afternoon hunt, on dusk my uncle sees a deer at 200 meters on a slip, I say shoot he says nah he will wait for a better position.... Neck minute it f#cks off into the bush.... Great better position for the deer.
We don't say anything but we both have that sinking feeling that , that could be the one and only chance we get on the trip.
On the walk back to the hut, we wonder whom this possumer is ,how old , life experiences etc . As the hut was the neatest and tidiest we had every stayed at.
At the hut we meet Tui (Lab/GSP), and Scott GC, and exchange pleasantries. Over the course of the next 2 nights we find that this young guy only 26 has had life experiences that would make a great book, from been brought up on a farm in the King Country, a Shepperd in the King Country, to been in the NZ Army etc.
Over the next two nights, we enjoy his company and generosity as he cooks us wild pork over an open fire (which was unbelievably good sorry Rushy even better than your roast chicken), we talk and he tells us stories of his time hunting, trapping and in the army which have us in tears of laughter.
On the subject of hunting, he says you guys are keen cant believe you havn't got anything.... Yep mate nor can we!..
Next day we decided to mooch about the hut as the weather was crap in the morning, and go for a fish in the arvo and try our luck.
Scott says later boys I'm just going for a quick walk to "check out a place to put the traps", where we ask. Just across the river 100 meters from the hut. Seems a weird place to put traps , but hey what would I know.
2 hours Tui and Scott return with a Spiker on his back, and casually says here fellas got ya a deer , since you weren't having any luck.
WE SAID PARDON ? GOT YA A DEER TAKE IT. YOUR SHITTY US ? NOPE ! YOU WANT SOME ? NAH ! YOU SURE ? AH OK MAYBE A BACK STEAK IF YOU DON'T MIND?
Yeah we don't mind.
So two great full armed walkers enjoyed the walk back to the car with heavier packs than we stared the trip with, so a big thank you to TUi and SCOTT.
Ladies and gentlemen the twist.... this is the second time this has happen to me an my uncle at this very hut by two different hunters whom we have never met before... Hence the name GIFT HUT !.
To all the GC's . You rock....!
