Just got back from a evening hunt or should I say scout around. Nice evening with a light but steady breeze and quite warm. I did a bit of a drive about first and only seen the odd old print here and there until I reached a spot you have to walk to, here there was plenty of fresh sign but it was to early at about 5.30pm.
I decided to wait at the truck as it's only a short walk back to a good glassing area.
At 6.30 pm I headed back up to the lookout and started glassing. After 20 odd minutes I left that spot and followed a ridge a short way then followed the spur down towards the bush edge, sign everywhere so it looked promising.
I got to a point where a skid had been when it was milled a couple of years back and stopped and glassed the many hidden folds in the land.
At a couple of minutes past 7.00pm a cracker stag steps into view at about 200- 250 yards ( I didn't even bother to range him)
He stood there for a couple of minutes watching and listening then moved over to a patch of grass and started feeding. I in the mean time was checking him out , he was good, he had his brows, bays , trez, on both sides and about 7-8 inches of growth above the trez. He was shaping up to be a wide head by the looks and decent thickness in the timber.
He carried on feeding there for a while then dropped into a gully and started feeding his way up it.
I decided he was to good to shoot now so took a picture of him at about 180 yards but my camera isn't to crash hot at that range on animals but you can see him ok but not the antlers.
I sure hope I get another look at him in late January ......i won't hesitate on the trigger then.
