    Holiday Mish

We were supposed to go up North in the second week of the holidays but that couldnt happen, so Oliver and I went hunting instead. We picked it good. If we have left it any later we would have been stuck at home.
We eneded up going in for 5 nights. 1 at the road end, 2 at our biv and anther 2 at a hut further down the track.
It wasnt a hard core hunting trip. Sleeping in every day and hunting in the afternoon.
I found a wicked new spot. Deer sign for Africa. If you had the wind right you would be guaranteed to see a Deer.
Didnt shoot a Deer until the last night though. THe dog just about wrecked it for us as there were 3 Deer on the clearing and he could hardly contain himself.
I was on one an a half eyes too. I scratched my eyeball the day before on a twig or something. It was driving me nuts. I went to the Doc when I got home and he said it was a pretty good scratch, one of the worst hes seen . Fortunately it wasnt my shooting eye. I got some drops and its heaps better now.
I managed to get one though and it was a nice yearling hind so great eating. Being headshot meant I wasted absolutely no meat and even took out the ribs for the dogs to chew on. I also took the skin to use for scent training on my new pup.
Ive never used a skin before. I have just chucked it in the Freezer in a rubbish bag with no salt. I was thinking I would get it out of the freezer , drag it round a but and put it back in when I finish. Is that what you are meant to do? I thought about salting it but I figured the salt might interfere with the scent

I have used frozen skins for training my mutt seems to work all good just cut into decent chunks so when one bit gets a bit old and chewed up I throw it out and use a fresh section

Had a schoolteacher a bloke Colin Luff? that was into hunting.
School trips to Waikarimoana, Waipakihi with hunting included.
    It was magic.
Mind you i left school in 1976/7.
The kids next door had overnight camp to Waihohonu hut last year.
They said the girl who was hut warden went out and shot 3 deer so I guess still happening to a certain extent.
