Greeting @hebe,
That was a blast from the past. I used to go into that area a lot around 40 years ago. Aranga Hut does not look as though it has been painted since. I believe it is outside the Park. The Kaumatua Stream basin which is to the south of the Sentry Box Track was used as an experimental hydrology basin in the 70's and there was a track up the ridge on the south side for reading the rain gauges. It was way easier than Sentry Box but likely overgrown now. We used to get to the old Parks Peak hut in about an hour and a half. One of the Hydro boys was reputed to have done it in 40 minutes. There are some really nice gullies in there if you can get to them past the stunted Beech.
Regards Grandpamac.
