Bit of a scenic escape last week with a packraft out. No big beasties taken but barely scratched the surface covering the country.

The Hopkins and Huxley are beautiful valleys that's for sure.
Awesome! Do you have a link for buying one of those rafts?
Yeah they go real good -NZ made too.

great place that alright!
Stunning valleys. Went into the Huxley early September last year for a few nights and the only thing I found was the bottom of the hip flask. Still, not a wasted effort. Pack rafting out looks like a good way to go though!
Hey great write up, thanks for sharing. Dear old Red Hut, a great (and luckily under-rated) base for a Tahr hunt.
I think this is possibly one of the "least changed" of the great MacKenzie Basin valleys since I started venturing up there in the very early 80s. We went up to Cullers Hut in mid winter 1980, my cousin (on NZFS field staff) wanted to look in on a climbers reunion taking place at Elco Hut. A cobber and I just wanted to see a Tahr. Little did we know my cousin had an alterior motive - he was scouting possible approaches for a climb on "The Dark Tower" (possibly the peak The Gladiator?) which according to him was very difficult to approach. W3 cl8mbed very high, with much greater exposure than my cobber and I were emotionally prepared for ( basically scared the shit out of both of us) and no Tahr were harmed.
Then "the 80s" happened and it was 30 years before I started going back up there again.
It’s a cool spot
Epicnessness
I was hunting in Canada a couple of weeks ago with a young guy who is in to pack rafting.
He's also a smoke jumper so likes living on the edge.
His latest craze is parachuting in to a remote spot, hunting it, and then pack rafting out. After sheep mainly.
If anyone is keen on a hunt like that pm me and I'll hook you up.
Nice post and pics @FRST ,beautiful valley alright
