Hunting at last and score a stag

Hi, Its been awhile since i have done any reports. Reason is i took most of the winter off hunting.
Did the odd short look but no serious stuff bar one or two hunts. Bodies getting old, aches and pains and getting up at 4am doesnt do it for me as much as it did, esp when its cold.

Must be getting soft lol. Emptied the freezer out awhile ago getting some small goods done so was basicliy out of venison for the first time in years.

Hence decided today was the day to do some hard yards and look for a deer.
Took the 308 with the 165gr Fed Fusions this hunt with the stoneycreek bushline pack and headed to a area only been twice before .

Had a shower over night so was perfect bush stalking condations and i set off into the bush just after first light.
Straight away i see good marks of a stag and seemed to be some animals around so right off the bat i was going extra slow.

it was great to be out in the bush again and i had high hopes i get a deer in here.

After a hour the bush got quite dense and i knew i would need some luck to get one in here but the luck gods were smiling on me.

I was standing in a little open piece of bush and i heard a snap a wee way away out to my right.
Was that a deer? I waited for 5 mins then i heard a animal pushing its way thru the rubbish headinng toward me.

Couldnt believe my luck, it was heading straight for me and as it was some thick i had no chance of seeing it unless it walks out less than 30 feet from me.

Im waiting for it to appear and suddenly just to the left of the rubbish a stag appears.
I have the crosshairs on it as its standing broadside but the shots not totally clean as theres abit of light crap in the way.
Suddenly it turns and sees me and as soon as it does it goes to bolt! Boom! as i squeeze off and send the 165gr on its way.

I hit the stag al little far back as his reactions were quicker than mine but he goes straight down thou.

Suddenly all hell breaks loose, theres a huge crash in front of me and another stag with antlers charge me from 30yards. It changes direction a few feet from me and i had already re loaded
but he was only about a 6 pointer with a crap head so i didnt shoot it and watched it crash off.

At the same time another deer(prob another stag)crashes of to the right of me making a hell of a racket but didnt get to see that one.

Wow, that wasnt bad for a morning hunt and im not far from the 4x4.
I was glad i had the 308 as extra fire power in this rubbish was useful. Wasnt a bad stag, had dropped its antlers and on further imspection i noticed the round went straight thur the deer
and made quite a hole in the tree behind

Great stuff fella really enjoyed the read. Its that time of the year alright.

Me and the young fella were at the range early doors in the fog this morning.

They were all flying where they should so the next early one will be in the hills for sure

Nice one mate, I really enjoy your hunting yarns. I hear you on the getting old and aches and pains. But they all seem to go away when in the thick of hunting and the adrenalin kicks in and seem to return shortly after the carry out begins.

Looking forward to reading more of your spring hunting exploits

    Cheers FBD
