I haven't been out for a hunt in a while, and the dog has not been getting the attention required to stay on her game, so I took a stroll out the back of my place in the hope of a bit of meat.
The pigs have been real busy over the last week or so, as the ground is wet as. Plenty of very fresh rooting to be seen, but no animals out to play during daylight.
Whilst heading back to the truck after 3 hours of fruitless walking, the dog suddenly stopped and winded hard to my left. Wind was coming from my left too, so I reckoned that whatever she could smell, could most likely already smell us too, but I waited it out, just to see what happened.
After 8 to 10 minutes of hard out air scenting and staring at a spot in the dense bush, I see movement. A big black billy was feeding towards us, followed by what turned out to be 7 other goats.
They reached about 60 yards from us before a young Nanny spotted me and we began a staring match for 5 more minutes. She knew something wasn't quite right and was going to blow my cover for sure. The dog was by now shaking like hell and just wanted to go kill one, so I had to hold her in and line up a quick neck shot with the 308.
125 accubond did its job and a nice wee eater for me and the pup is now boned out and chilling down.
I know some say you shouldn't shoot goats over a dog if you want use them on deer, but I am not convinced on that one. Good to get out either way
