Hard to tell from the pics, but could be an azalea. Same family as rhodo's. There's some thing about the number of stamens... can't remember what it is, but rhodo's have I think it's double what azaleas have. Azaleas also have less leathery, and slightly more pointy leaves - the underside of the leaf is how you can usually tell. Was the spot anywhere near somewhere that could have had an old farm settlement nearby?
