Last event for the hunts course

Just a few photo's ,was a nice spot to spend the long weekend with the others that did the course & the instructors & guys n girls from TVDA . Nice hunt being planned already.Thanks to all involved ,quite a learning curve but glade now having done the course. Think also the NZDA need to be congratulated for these courses & the content of . At the end of the course have met some neat people & shared their company over a couple of pretty full on months .

Good shit Chris. I must get my arse in there one day. Young Phillip tells me it is an easy hoof even for an old codger.

Well no its a hard slog from Heli Sika ,the sign at the hut says 4.5 hrs.With a full pack its hard work even for a young bugger ,especially in the heat of the day.I was allowed to drive most of the way due to my stuffed knee but I turned down the chopper ride out & packed it back to the wagon.

Nice looking area, many animals spotted in there ?

The heat can be a problem as its all open, but it's dead flat which makes it easy :thumbsup: knowing you rushy you'd have walked most of it before morning tea so the midday sun shouldn't trouble you

Well Rushy maybe young Philip has a sense of humor too, perhaps he wanting to see you blow your fofo valve for a laugh .

Oneshot , most of the guys didn't see much sign but deer where seen although a bit to quick for flat foots .I personally found a "lot" of sign ,just couldn't track them down.Was very dry under foot ,hadn't been much rain for a long time in there.

I must give it a crack then. If Chris is right about 4.5 hours then starting at five thirty I could be there by ten.

Or you could do what a lot of guys do & walk in at night when its cooler .Couple of my mates did that Friday night went up past Jap creek & choppered out from the hut after .

Good stuff Chris, I have to get myself back to the Oamaru hut again at some stage but would like to fly in and out due to the long walk

Possibly the easiest walk ever plus usually see a heap of deer on poronui which is a bonus. A chopper into oamaru public is quite possibly the biggest waste of money around. Each to there own tho! :thumbsup:

When you are restricted in how many days you have got to hunt due to work commitments I would rather take a 5 min chopper ride over a 3.5 hour walk to maximise my hunting time. For a walk in trip to there you really need more than a saturday and a sunday or it is just not worth going

Your onto it Hunter , its dead walking .No bolt or ammo in rifle across Poronui ,which is fair enough being private land.If you see any deer on route you're not allowed to shoot them.So a chopper into & from hut is a smart option really.I couldn't do the walk now & very grateful to Poronui Station to allow me to take my wagon to 35 minutes of the hut.Poronui do have guided hunting on the station I believe so the deer on the property are there stock & part of their income . Still a valuable access for many people & would be a far longer walk into the valley if we should loose that due to some fuck wits .

You were very fortunate for them to let you drive through and big thumbs up to them for doing it, hell I would pay them a fee for that if it meant only a half hour walk instead of 3hrs 40mins which is what it took me to get back out of there a couple of years ago. A chopper trip there would be not so bad on the wallet if there were a couple of extra people to share the cost of the flight or even better head to the heli sika block on the other side of the river :D

The access was arranged by TVDA was a couple of others went as minders for the trainees.
So perhaps I need to put a plate up for the next club meeting .Will sort that pre-next club night.

Walk in at 4am and get there on sunrise is what I do to avoid the heat.

As for Rushy getting there, just strap one of those electric dog collars on and give him a zap if he falls behind or stops being active on the GPS.

Looks like a nice hut. I've been thinking of doing a mid week multi dayer, as my couple of forays into day-stalks have done little except provide entertainment for the local Deer. This be a decent place for it?

I can see why people love chasing sika, they are mighty sneaky little critters. Must be a hell of a buzz when you finally put one on the deck

Very comfy hut Nick-D , I was in a tent but was spare beds in the hut. Log fire is a bonus but probably need it in there ,we had a real good frost Saturday night .Shocker waking up to crispy white & frozen billies & toes ,not sure where my cods went .

I remember hanging a pair of socks to dry on that clothes line in the alcove by the door only for them to be frozen stiff the next morning. Yep those bunks are certainly a welcome sight after a long slog to the hut. I will never forget wading through the kaipo in the really heavy frost we had when we walked out of there glad I was wearing thermals.

That frigin river is still like ice water now Hunter ,hate to think what its like in winter .

I waded through that damn river in June when it was cold as hell, when i got out my legs were stinging and I thought my nuts were going to drop off from the water being so cold, another good reason to fly in :D

Probably just drag you by your foot, you can hold your breath pretty well?

Rushy there's not much to worry about ,the fella getting his short wet must have very short legs mate. Its only a ankle deep crossing,river shingle & sand .I took my boots off ,in fact I did that for every crossing ,had dry boots for the weekend .
