Took my mates son out for a bit of a rabbit shoot yesterday afternoon out on a fairly hilly farm. Took out the savage mark 2 .22lr and the 260rem in tikka t3 both being left hand. so there wasnt much out early on; i spotted a rabbit at 188 yards and thought, thats a bit close.
So we walked back to a knob to 242 yards i gave him the firing solution and he fired hitting it in the shoulder. We spotted another rabbit at 316yards and to the same result first shoot straight through the engine room. By the way firing a 143eld-x at 2750 fps (b.c @ .623 has been spot on for me).
At this stage he had shot about 15 (in the Manuwatu not to bad for the early afternoon), and he wanted to push the envelope. We spotted two rabbits on a flat knob surrounded by native bush, i ranged one at 380yards and put the 8mph wind coming from our 4o'clock into the calculator and crack straight through the shoulder with one shot. i was pretty surprised, no bipod straight of the back of my pack with a rear bag. not bad for a third former. The other rabbit on the knob was chilling out i told young fella i'm not sure if i'm ranging the right surface seeing we was in a little dip. we used the same solution and the bullet sailed over the rabbit by a hair; i dropped a .25 moa he fired again and meet his mark. Amazing shooting for his age, the wind gave me some excellent wind call practise. Approximately 20 shot in total. Walked 8.1km up 180 flights of stairs. Though he deserved a write up.
