@Mrs Sideshow, so many people would simply love the opportunity to be able to do the sort of things again that they did when they were younger. Down there you will have the opportunity for fresher food than you will ever get from your flash restaurants. The peace and tranquillity. No pretentious people to deal with, what you will have is genuine. Getting back to nature in a place like that will refresh your soul and put the world back into perspective.

Relax and enjoy one of the planets most wonderful places. Oh. and the bunks work better that the hard floor, just watch your head.

The wild life has to be experienced to be appreciated.
I guess he hasn't said too much about the sand flies .... especially the really big ones that hang out in the long drop.

So what you might think, so are millions of others.
True, but I am not a Kiwi, I am from Europe.
Again, you might ask, so what?

Well, let’s just say that seeing we come from different cultures, we don’t always look at things the same way.
He is a hunter, I am not.
He dreams of Stewart Island, I dream of Bora Bora
He is getting his wish, I am coming along kicking and screaming

Here is my side of the story:

« You will love Stewart Island. There are very few people, in fact, you’ll see no one once we get to the place we booked. We’ll have our own private beach, you’ll be able to see stunning sunsets and if you are willing to venture out into the wilderness, you might even come across a Kiwi.”
My husband of ten years looks at me with a big smile on his face, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. At this point, he hasn’t told me that there will be no electricity, no wifi, no heating and no running water. He hasn’t told me that I will be sleeping in a sleeping bag in a cabin, that temperatures will rarely climb into doubles figures, that it probably will rain a lot and that I will be spending my days alone while he goes off hunting. And he definitely has not told me that this whole adventure is going to cost about the same as a two-week holiday in a five-star hotel in Bora Bora.

In fact, at this point, he is still full of confidence that his European wife who has a penchant for fluffy duvets, warm Caribbean waters and Michelin star restaurants will happily accompany him to an Island that most people have never even heard of. At this point, he also still believes that she will spend her day in a cabin, faithfully waiting for the return of her hunter husband. He even thinks she will have dinner ready for him, that she will listen to his tales of a day’s hunting and he probably also believes that she will enthusiastically peel herself out of the many layers of clothing she will be forced to wear to make love on the hard and cold wooden planks of their cabin.

Really? Has he lost his marbles? Is he blind? Did someone give him drugs? I mean seriously, who did he think he married? Ok, fair enough, we did meet in Uganda when he was working as an Overland Driver and I was backpacking my way to Rwanda to see the Gorillas. At the time, neither of us had a lot of money. We were both still in that adventure stage of our life where you don’t have to think about mortgages, careers, pensions, etc. So, yes, you could say we were roughing it. Sleeping in tents, not having showers for several days, using bushes and long drops to do our business and surviving on beer (him not me) and samosas (me not him). Then it was heaven. Now it’s like, do I have to?

I mean, today we do have a mortgage and we do have careers (well kind of) and after backpacking through Myanmar in 2013 we swore to each other that we would never rough it again. So where on earth did Stewart Island suddenly appear from?
@Mrs Sideshow, I can't help but draw a parallel of your post to this one a few years ago.

"Should I go to Stewart Island?" / "Should I get my firearms license?" and these questions being asked on a kiwi hunting and shooting forum. Now I wonder how the answers are likely to go? It did take some intervention, involving frog marching someone to get the photos and to visit the police station, but @TimeRider did indeed honour the overwhelming response to her question (gee, what a surprise that response was). She loves it, and so will you. You know what you have to do.

PS, bit of a lump in my throat when I saw the first to respond to TimeRiders thread.

    This went downhill fast

Take a light scarf to cover your face, gloves and long sleeves and the sandflies will be no problem.

@Mrs Sideshow What an interesting, entertaining, articulate, person and writer you are. I like your style and humour and I can see why Mr Sideshow would want you with him in camp. Do not fear, this will very likely be the best holiday adventure you have ever had. This is the case for many hunters wives talked into coming on a trip to the wilds. The holiday that you would write about.

Now a lot of areas in the world have biting insects in certain seasons and they can make an otherwise great holiday disappointing, so the only answer is to be prepared and take a hat with some insect mesh for the late afternoons on the days they are bad and make sure that you buy some repellant with Deet as the active ingredient.

Myself and my good lady live on the Island of Rakiura {Land of the glowing skies] also known as Stewart Is.
Have a guess where we go on our holidays? Give in, ok we go to a remote beach out west of our Island and cant wait till that time comes around each year to get away from the tourist ridden areas of the Island. People come from all the corners of the world to see what youll experience for your self.
Make your decision after the trip about what you think it was like. Im sure youll feel different and get the warm fuzzies when you think back on it all and if it doesn't come to you like that then you've got Bora Bora next year.

It is a beautiful area to visit with lots of wildlife to experience. The seafood is great and with a little luck hubby should knock a deer or two over and you can enjoy some of the best venison around. I am sure after you have suffered the hardship of Stewart Island Bora Bora could be on the agenda next year. I reckon you will enjoy the trip and remember it for a long time to come. Hope you post a detailed account of the trip, look forward to it.
