    A Midweek quicky

Had the day off yesterday so I opted to go for a wander down in Pureora for a day with my boy and a dog.
Mainly to blow off s few cobwebs and get the dog back in the bush.
Had a leisurely start and got to the road end about 1130.
We went in the bush with a general plan to follow the wind and give the dog some practice.
She was not too bad but got a bit keen at times and I had to bring her in.
We saw plenty of sign and spooked a couple but not close enough to get eyes on anything.
It was getting later in the day and I hatched a plan to hit a clearing not too far from the track. I had the dog in beside me with Oliver behind.
Ahead of me I saw a Deer side on to me head down, oblivious.
I aimed just behind the front shoulder and fired.
It ran off at the shot and disappeared.
    We made out
r way to where I thought it had been but couldn't find any blood or trace of a hit.
You begin to second guess yourself.
We searched around and eventually found some blood. Things were looking up.
There wasn't much though and after a while it began to peter out.
I got Bea and Oliver on the job
He stayed at the last blood spot and after giving Bea some blood to smell, I followed her. It didn't take too long and we found more blood again. Probably 40 our 50 meters though. I called Oliver up and we repeated the process. Shortly after that we found it. A 5 point stag. Still on his feet but not well. I gave him another finisher.
This was a real team effort and without Oliver and Bea I don't think I would have found it.
I think my shot needed to be a bit higher.

Nice! Trust the dog.Last year I had to follow the dog for over 100m through the scrub to find the deer, never would have found it without her.

    Hi FBD.
It's a Howa Mini in 223 on an Elude chassis with an Aimpoint H2 on the too. 14ish barrel carbon wrapped with a DPT.
Shooting 55 gainers but I want to try some heavier bullets.

@Chur Bay what weight do you want to try? I can spare some 73gr ELD m if your rifle has the right twist. Neat wander, hoping to take my two boys out tomorrow afternoon.

I was thinking about trying some heavier Targex. I like the idea of a Kiwi made bullet. Probably should be done with it and just get some.

Good stuff. That’s why I like a bigger caliber, a little bit more forgiving. 😀 Having said that even the 300 RUM can embarrass you!

Nice looking little rifle there Chur Bay. Can you answer me a few questions.

    1) Do you find that the rifle is hard to carry thru the bush?? Ie does it get caught up on the grip or the butt lever (?)

    2) How many animals have you shot with it? Do you think a 223 is a good choice in regard to recoil v knock down power??

    3) And the aim point. I've never used one. Is it good for the bush?? How do you adjust them to sight them in?

    Thanks

    K

    light. 2.6 kg.
the butt end of the stock gets caught up on it a bit.
Aimpoint is very good, just no magnification. Good for under 100m
I've shot 3 deer with this set up and a goat.
    223 has pros and cons.
No recoil. a bit limited in energy.
Shot placement is key I guess.

PM me your address and I will send you a few 69grn Targex to try.
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.
