    The mighty Sako 243 does it again

    Evening everyone. After looking after the kids friday night while my better half went out to dinner with some friends I finally had some leverage to get out for the first 2019 roar hunt! What an awesome little morning it was. Nothing comes close to roaring stags up close and personal in the bush. Hope you enjoy the video.

    Sure am. My 284 is still in load development due to being busy and bugger carrying the rem mag in the bush haha. I grew up learning to hunt with my Dads Sako Forester 243 so it has a bit of meaning to me. One of my favourite little calibers. Glad you enjoyed the vid! Thanks, Dylan.

    Enjoyed that!

    What bullet are you using in your .243? There was a lot of blood from the first shot, where did you hit him and was the blood coming from his nose or from the wound?

    @Flyblown I was using Federal Fusion 95gr rounds for this one. That first shot went low in the front right shoulder and into the lower chest. I never found the entry point but soon found the smashed lower leg. He was quartering towards me when I fired and was sure I aimed higher for the neck shoulder junction which should have dropped him. My guess is it either deflected off the scrub in the way or I made an error in my shot placement. I knew straight after the shot I should have been a touch more patient and let him come closer but none the less I was very happy to get him!

    I grew up shooting a 243 using that exact ammo. Dropped everything I pointed it at from yearlings to big stags. This current rifle doesn’t shoot them that flash so I’m slowly working through box by box until find what it likes. Probably end up reloading for it at some point anyway. Cheers

    @stagstalker, may I make a suggestion.

    When I was a young 'un chasing roe and fallow in England, I used 105gr round nose Speers in my .243 Win. This was because my grandpa had proven to himself that spitzers were super sensitive to deflection off vegetation. The round nose profile was considerably less sensitive. That was a lesson he learned way back when in NZ conditions. So naturally, I did what I was told.

    As you'll know, at the range you're shooting in the woods, you don't need half MOA accuracy. Mind you those round nose Speers were still accurate bullets. For the application in your video, I would consider the Hornady 100gr Interlock RN, it has worked very well for me in my 1:10" twist rifles and I use it occasionally when I know I am going to be in the thick stuff, typically Kaimais, and it has flattened a good few reds and goats for me. I switch back to the ProHunters when I am in open country conditions.

    Some good info there mate thanks. Next box I buy will be some hornady 100grainers to see if it shoots them any better. Just me being fussy at the end of the day anyway. They all shoot accurate enough to knock over animals haha.

    Well done, nice team work, nothing wrong with a 243 when the right pill is used for the job.
