    For Muz. RIP

This one is for Muz. Muz always followed my stories and adventures and often messaged me about what he was up to and what I was doing.

So yesterday we had a working bee at the hut we are building. The exterior is finished now except for the painting and steps. Brian and Craig built while I painted a couple of the exterior walls (until I ran out of paint) and put the windows in.

When we had finished at about 5.30pm we tidied up and headed off for a hunt. The other 2 in one direction and me in another.

At about 6.30pm I spotted a black Fallow that I needed to get closer to work out what t was. At 300 yards I could see that it was a mature doe likely with a fawn, so I decided to get closer for some pics and maybe see another one that was shootable. I got opposite her at 239 yards and straight away spotted that a younger doe had joined her on the clearing. It was smaller and I guessed a younger member of her family group and I was certain that it was too young to have bred so decided to take her for meat.

At the shot from the .270 wsm she ran off the clearing swinging a front leg, and then came backing onto to it again and tumbled down dead. It all took about 10 seconds.

I glanced up while crossing the creek over to the clearing and there was the black doe again, standing over her dead mate and very reluctant to leave. I got several pics and some nice vid of her at 70 yards before she finally trotted off into the bush.

The one I had shot turned out to be a 2year old doe. I immediately took a pic of her dry udder and texted it to Craig who always gives me shit about the "dry" hinds I shoot - his comment is always "yeah, right Dad".

She was a pretty little thing but her skin was well ruined by the shot. I boned her out and chucked her into my pack and started the grind back to the quad. 2 hours later I was on the quad and on my way back to the truck where I met the others'. They had both seen deer but had shot nothing.

So there you go Muz, the first deer from the new hut that you were so enthusiastic about. I'm sorry you and Dad never got down to it like we talked about. Rest easy my friend.
