Not quite as i pictured it in my mind.

Took my lab/Viszla cross "boom" out for a hunt in the kaimai last weekend from Whakamarama Rd end, lets just say is was not like i pictured in my mind.
painful is how I would describe the experience. With all the training we have been doing I would have sworn he was rock solid on the heeling,
once we got in the bush it was a whole different @#!%$! :pissed off: ballgame.To make matters worse he scragged two possums really loudly and then came trotting back to me like he was the shit. Man I was angry. Note to self, more training sessions before doing that again.Still it was a good walk and did find fresh sign.

he is two and a half now. We camped near the leyland obrien tramway junction I hunted the bush south of the junction. My mate checked out some clearings he saw on google, That turned out to be swampy pampas areas.:XD:

Dogs (and us) learn by making mistakes. As hard as it may sound; try and not show any attention to the possums (walk up to him, then just walk away) and he'll soon learn that it doesn't interest you - and very soon it wont interest him either if it's not making you happy.

You'll loose more deer than you'd normally get without the dog while training him, that's just how it is. But at some point he'll turn that tide and then you'll wonder how you ever hunted without him.

my dog was a pain in the butt (gsp) but now at two years she is improving no end. I just give her lots of work, and take her with me all the time. hang in there.

try clipping him to your belt, on a lead

Keep him tight and correct him the minute he moves off. If he breaks cut him off or follow him up, dont let him chase amd learn self satisfying habits. They canbcertainlynbe testing but when it comes rightbits all worth while

My dog is four, and she still requires the odd refresher. If she wanders off heel, or breaks, I never chase after her. I make her sit, and go to her, and then her drag her back by the collar to where we started from. Make her heel, and carry on.

You need to have a good stop on them to do this though. A good sit or stop is dog obedience 101 for a deer dog.

If you don't have a stop, and have to go after your dog, still take it back on a lead or by the collar/scruff back to the point it broke from.

When he caught his first possum you needed to kill it, and beat the dead possum growling while you do it, give him a big growling too and then the possum and then him etc etc while hitting the possum. I did that with a possum, rabbit and goat when I was training my pig-dog. I even went so far as hitting him with it. Not so hard it hurt him but hard enough so he knew that catching one of those was not pleasing. He also related the animal to the punishment as well. I got the idea from a book on teaching retrievers. You are supposed to pat and praise the duck then dog etc. This is how the connect the praise with the animal.

He was an intelligent dog but I only had to do it once per species and he never chased, bailed or caught one ever again.
