    Oliver's first Deer

Just back from an overnight mission in Kaimanawas. I was wanting for him to get his first Deer this Summer so we decided on a tops mission. This time of year there are usually a few about and being open gives a few more opportunities.
We got to the tops in good time and set up camp not too far from the bush edge.
The wind was good and we headed off to find a good lookout spot. We hadn't been there long when I saw a deer across a gut from us. It was oblivious to us but there was no decent rest and at 170 yards was too far for an offhand shot.
We decided to move into a better position but a wind shift alerted it to us and it was off.
That was our only opportunity and we returned to camp slightly disappointed. This morning we got up at 5:00 and headed off to another spot. It was quite cold and windy and no deer were seen. We headed back to camp and the wind eased and the sun came out.
I decided to go back to where we were last night and have a sit and glass. We'd been there not more than 5 minutes and a wee spiker fed into veiw, maybe 100 yards away. The wind was good and we had a good shooting spot. I got Oliver in behind the gun. We had to wait a bit for a decent shot to present itself but Oliver was patient and he tipped it over with a good shoulder shot.Name: IMG_20201230_092342_0.jpg

I've always maintained that if he is old enough to shoot a deer he needs to be able to carry it too.
First he had to carry it back to camp.[GLOW]Name: IMG_20201230_094148_2.jpg

Back at camp I butchered the deer and packed up
    camp.
Oliver carried half back to the truck.
He reckons he wasn't tired but I'm not too sure.

All in all a great trip and very proud Dad moment.
    Hopefully the first of many.
