    Over Nighter to Jap Creek

I wanted to check out some new (to me) country this weekend, I tossed up a few areas, plan was to mish it in after work Friday, have a full day and walk out Sunday morning. Work turned to custard and there was no way I was leaving at 8pm so I ended up leaving at 5am the next Morning, The walk in was foggy - I couldnt see much past the barrel of my gun on the way in. As I dropped into the Oamaru River the sky was clearing.

I have never been to the hut before so had a quick nose around, a well appointed place with a great outlook. Plenty of trout were seen in the pools just outside the hut with my naked eye, some polarized glasses would have no doubt revealed more.

Pressing on to Jap Creek I arrived mid morning and had a nose around the few campsites there.

I stopped for an early lunch then headed up the creek and hunted the terraces on the true left, simply beautiful country in there. The wind however wasn't playing ball, plenty of fresh sign was found but nothing so much as a spooked deer.

I decided to have nosey around the flats before crossing the stream to head home, I saw this guy but Just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on a yearling (I think I've gone a bit soft in the head since the birth of my son)

Back at the wagon took just 2hrs 40 (from Oamaru Stream crossing)

I did just shy of 38k's in 30 hrs so the feet are a touch sore this afternoon

    I will definitely be back.
