Pre roar scouting and my first bowed stag

Been a bit quiet on the hunting front since the birth of our first baby in September, although I've been getting out for a few evening and morning hunts, and doing a bit of diving and fishing in between. Now that Lachie is 5 months old and in a bit of a routine, I thought it a good chance to get away for a couple of days before the roar comes. A lack of hunting hasn't bothered me at all as I am loving fatherhood -it really is best feeling coming home to the wee bugger every day!

With great anticipation, we headed to a spot we visited last year, where we saw a couple of young stags with good potential.

Covered plenty of kms, in winds that were a nightmare. Glassing was a challenge in the open, so we had to hide behind anything that gave a little bit of shelter. Most animals were well down in the valleys out of the wind, but most stayed in the open all day - a sure sign they're not getting hounded. It was great to see animals out in the open stuff.

Saw a few animals about, mostly young stags and hinds with fawns at foot. A couple of chamois were seen also, one a pretty good one, which was pretty awesome to see.

On the first evening we stalked a couple of young stags and I managed to close the gap to 35m and drop one with my bow. He is my first stag and fourth deer with my bow, something I am thoroughly enjoying the challenge of.

Anyway here's a few photos and a short video of the trip

Did you make a bit of a metallic noise as you nocked your arrow?
    Good shooting anyway!

I went to place my rangefinder down beside me and it knocked on my bow. Doh!

It was a steep downhill shot, much steeper than it looks on camera. I allowed for the strong wind but not enough for the steep angle and quartered the arrow from the top of his lungs down and forwards. The arrow didn't pass right thru, only penetrated about halfway - it hit rib bones I think. Because he jumped the string as the arrow hit him, and he was caught off guard, tripped/fell and basically never recovered. He bled out and was glazed over by the time I'd got down to where he'd rolled to.

    Wow Josh, nice work.

What calibre is that bow! I thought only Mr Duely was allowed to do that!

    Good choice of music too...
