Two hunting mates were back up from Chch for a few days and were keen to get out for a hunt in an old fav spot we use to hunt together.
So a plan was hatched and we set off about mid arvo. Saw the first two deer before even getting to the road end.
Within 10 mins of reaching the area we wanted to hunt we'd seen another two, however the wind was agaisnt us and they must have winded us and were getting the hell out of dodge.
We carried on and tried to get into a better position for the wind direction and quickly picked up two more on another little clearing. Couldnt get a shot at them due to terrain/bush. So moved around closer to a spot we knew we could shoot from but at the risk of the deer hearing us or winding us.
Both happened i think and by the time we broke out in the open again the deer were gone, we then spooked another just 30 yards in front of us but never saw it.
We were pretty wet by this stage as there was light drizzle the whole time, we sat and watched for a little bit then decided our scent had probably gone into that whole area so decided to carry on further, just as we were about to leave we spotted another 3 deer feed out onto another clearing, the old hind was pretty cagey and took her fawn away to safety pretty quick but the yearling hind lingered right on the bush edge for a moment too long.
A 162gr Amax was dispatched destined for her front shoulder, it covered the 320 yards in split second and we all watched the deer hit the deck before the solid thump came back.
The entry side shoulder was trashed but the offside was completely fine. So we havested the back steaks, back legs and one front shoulder as well as the eye fillets.
She was in pretty good nic, so my mates will have some top quality veni to take back home for Xmas.
Certainly seems theres lots of deer in the Ruahine front country currently. Get into them lads!
