Thread: Quick weekend tahr hunt

Did a quick mission up to Canterbury in the weekend to look for a spring bull tahr before we all get too busy as the year winds down! A pretty goood leg stretch in the morning stomping our way in, before we set to glassing and finding some tahr. Bulls were where we expected to find them and I drew the long straw on a decent looking bull that G spotted a km below us in the creek. Managed to get to the only shooting position where I could get a clear view of him, and after waiting for ducks to line up, pole axed him at 507m. The next couple hours were spent getting down through the monkey scrub to him, then busting my arse back up the hill to the boys. Out with the tape, and he's 13 1/2 on the short side with 9 inch bases...stoked. Been a while since I've got a decent bull for myself. Later in the day we glassed a few scrubby gullies seeing a few young bulls but nothing big or old enough. As the day started to run out, we spotted and put a stalk on an old 11-12 year old bull who had snapped one of his back legs off and was dragging himself around the mountainside. G managed to put an end to the poor old boys suffering before the fog and rain rolled in and forced us down off the hill. Looked into a bit of new country for another trip later on and then bailed on the crappy Canterbury weather and boosted it back south to the sunshine!
