Report on my shortest ever hunt

I was so looking forward to my hunt on Sunday. A primo forecast after the cold wet southerly that went through on Saturday. I was expecting deer would be out in the sun everywhere.

I left home at 4am, 2 hr drive to spot x. I was amping as I was pulling my boots on, I'd had a couple of very busy weeks with work and there was nothing I was looking forward to move than being up the hill on my own and settling in behind the binos to search for a willing participant to help me test the terminal performance of the 195gr Bergers from the new 28 Nosler.

It was nice and still and a clear starry sky, it was going to be an awesome day.

Then literally just 30 seconds from the car I slip and dislocate my bloody knee AGAIN, hit the deck pretty hard giving the new rifle and new scope a big smack on the ground.

I picked my sorry sore asre up and hobbled back to truck before the knee swelled up too much. Dosed up on anti-inflammatory and pain relief and headed for home. Luckily it's my left leg and the truck is an auto, otherwise I don't think I could have driven.

Not quite the alone time I had in mind.

Was back home by 8.30am. Was a nice day for a drive tho.

    So Gutted.

I guess the upside was it happened very close to the car, as opposed to way over where I hopefully would have been recovering a deer from, I'd still be hobbling along if it happened over there.

The knee is swollen as and I can't really put weight on it.

On a more positive note, I've had a good look at the rifle/scope and cannot see any evidence of damage and a bore sight check looks good too. So hopefully all is good there.

    Mate, that sucks!

Maybe need to concentrate on hunting in less aggressive country. Steel normally inhabits areas that you can drive right to and shoot them steels from right next to the truck. Normally there is a track right to the steel for recovery purposes too...

If it's not a first round hit you need to practice more

    Good for your iron levels.

Bit of a bugger GWH. At least I only busted a couple of ribs last outing with Ryan_Songhurst so I could carry on for the over-nighter.

Mate I was on a nice flat track, just a silly little slip that must have straightened my leg out and twisted just enough to allow the knee cap to slip around to the outside.

It doesn't take much, I'm normally pretty careful because of it.

It's certainly something that I have in the back of my mind at times when out hunting or climbing... The "I don't want to hurt myself here because it will be a clusterf#*k if I do" thought.

It’s probably the main reason why I carry an InReach with me, if I get hurt but don't feel it justifies a PLB activation at least I can get in touch with someone to help me out
