I could only get away twice for the roar this year and both trips were only overnighters, so I had to picked the weather wisely.
There was a fine spell on its way on the 14th of april so I got everything organized at work so I could get away. I ended up jacking up a chopper ride in onto the main range which would save me the five to six hour walk in.
The morning was as still as it gets but I wasn't leaving until lunch time, so my fingers were crossed that the wind wasn't going to pick up. The flight in was amazing, it was well worth the $200. I pointed the pilot in the general direction of where I wanted to go and he got me as close as possible. He couldn't land so I had to throw my pack out and jump which was pretty exciting. I set off to find a camp and got it set up so I could get hunting.
Just as I left camp there was a roar the opposite direction of where I was heading so I turned around and had a go at him. I ended up roaring him in to 50 meters probably only 150 meters from camp but couldn't get a shot at him and he wandered off. There was several stags going so I was marking rough locations on the gps.
The next day was light winds as well so I headed off to where I had heard a stag the evening before. It wasn't long until I had him going and was sneaking in on him. He wasn't a very good head but I ended up taking him. I took the meat off him packed up camp and walked back out making it back just before dark.
