    Ruahine Roar Reconnaissance

A plan was hatched that me and a mate (Taranaki Hunter from the old forum) would head in to see if there was any roaring action happening in the Ruahines this early.

We decided to head somewhere new and walked in Friday night arriving at the hut in the dark. A quick set up of our gear and a plan was hatched for the following morning.

The following morning we found ourselves sitting in a prominent position and gave out a few roars to no avail. Nothing was interested and we couldn't hear anything else in the valley despite ideal conditions and our elevated location. We turned our attention to finding other animals in hopes of locating a stag with them and before long we spotted two hinds and a yearling feeding away. Initially, we decided not to shoot and watched the hinds hoping of a stag would soon follow. Nothing appeared after 30 mintues of watching them, and we decided I would have a crack at one of the hinds.

    Prior to the shot.

See video below... needless to say I was pretty stoked with shot despite it being pretty straight forward.

Later in the day - the weather turned to shit and only one other animal was spotted in between the constant showers. A nice yearling that was left for another day.

We awoke to rain this morning and after a bit of a sleep in we begun the long walk out. We did have a bit of luck on the way out with my mate managing to shoot a yearling in the bush just off the track no more than five mintues before the car park. No photos of the yearling as we didn't want to damage the camera in the rain.

Depsite the lack of roaring - it was still a successful trip.

Bring on the following few weeks.
