Saturday morning stroll

A mate of mine had been taking a young fella out pig hunting and he had mentioned he really wanted to get into deer stalking (intelligent young man:thumbup:)
So he gave him my no and as luck would have it i got a leave pass today.
Another 2am start and we saw a fat little 70ish pound pig on the drive in.
Parked up and started climbing for spotx arriving just as it was getting light enough to shoot,the light wind was perfect and we stalked in on my never fail spot.
Fail! Nobody was home but there were fresh prints everywhere. Weather it was the full moon or the recent pressure with savage hunter knocking over a spiker and another hunter shooting one of the hinds i can't say but they were not staying on the tops for daylight this morning.
Moving along up and into another fantastic basin and gully all that was sighted was a solitary goat with an unusual coat. Pitch black front half and white rear half. It was a stunning morning at around 1600asl with not a breath of wind as i lay in the tussok glassing having a osm bar for break fast then a durry to go with the fresh air.
Up and moving again to look into one more area before i fell asleep in the sun and just as we crossed over the ridge a stiff breeze sprang up straight up our Arse! Bugger bolted over and down hoping to get out of it but it was to late. Just as i sat to glass i spotted a couple of stags that were bedded down in the bottom of a gut then they caught our wind, they were up and gone in a flash not even looking for the 2 sweaty hunters.
We had bout done our dash so started heading back stopping on the way to shoot a 6 inch rock on a slip 498y distant and 19 deg down. Shooter did the maths and a cold clean shot off my day pack hit dead center and a second the same:) my new hunting bud was astounded so i told him to have a go and he hit it as well:) feeling cocky i had a couple of shots off my knees and just missed it twice but would have been easy a dead deer. Not real long range but pleasing with the 308 in mountain breezes.
Getting back to the wagon at 12 I found i had a couple of firsts.
First blister in these boots, must have been my socks .
First ever time iv experienced Arse chaph ! Ill be happy enough if its the last :D
Driving back out a hind and fawn trotted across the road in front of us.
A few animals seen non shot and a bit of exercise i badly need.

It's a bloody good shot for a hunter 308 and a breeze.
Liked the whole post as well.

Well done VC. Out there doing it and a chaffed arse to prove it. Better get the missus to rub som salve on that. I am impressed at the long shots

Life is finite and you never know when it might end VC. Don,t stop doing the things that give you pleasure. You still got to the top even though you have been eating pies and drinking beer.

I totally agree. It is very easy to not get the opportunity sometimes

Belated reply Phillip, the thumb up thing Im picking is some sort of tappa talk glich when posting from phone.
As for seeing stuff, I see animals pretty much every time.BUT that is only because I dont shoot everything I see.
It would be real easy to shoot everything on the tops out of this area but I am trying to farm them;)
While I wouldn't begrudge a young or new hunter shooting anything they can. I hope once they have got a few they get a bit more "conservationist "

One thing I learnt very early on is you can only shoot a deer once,if you find a nice spot and there is three and you shoot one next time there will be 2 and so on. If you shoot em all out of an area it can take a LONG time for them to come back if ever.

waste of time VC its one of the few pleasurs we have left.To windy for my weeknd mission,... nxt week hopefully.As much as you rolled a donut on that trip it still sounded like a bloody good one, couldnt ask for more on a donut trip IMO cheerss.

Sound'e like a good walk, just make sure the missus actually rubs salve on it not deep heat or similar just for a laugh at your expense.

We went out in the bay this morning and I got a lesson from my missus on how to catch 5 kingis in 15 minutes. while i caught nowght!!!

Kept 1 at about 10Kgs, catch and release the rest smallest was still legal size so from 76 to 85cms in length. One of my other mates got 3 alberts yesterday out real wide.

You got any leave passes in credit. Gonna give it another shot next weekend.

Seeing animals everytime you go is good, vc. I wish I could say the same haha but nah, right now I'm putting in the foot-hours to find the animals so I can say the same in the future. All part of it. And you're very right about being conservative, I wish me and my mate had been a bit more selective about shooting goats out the back of my mates farm a few months ago. Went back there just after the new year it certainly hadn't bounced back. Didn't shoot all of them so they should come back eventually, but when they do, I'll only shoot one here and there.

Ps. When you shoot the tops, are you in Kahurangi National Park?
