    Schools Out

My eldest daughter is 7 and is off for Summer holidays from the grind that is Primary School.
At the suggestion that she would like to go hunting with her dad one day we were packed up and out the door before the last word had struck the floor.
The weather has been rather pleasant of late and today being a cooler day with a brief patch of rain yesterday had me itching to look out onto some local Kaweka country. This was to be our first official hunting trip so I figured it had better not be too tough or she could well never want to go again. After a short push up a popular access we decided to stop and glass the surrounding country.

The first Sika was not too long to appear but @ 870m over the river it was a definite pass.

Another 5 minutes up the track and the opposite side of the ridge yielded better results

Over the next hour and a half the manuka conjured up another 2 japs and at under 350m were possible shots.

The difficulty was the retrieve, with patchy contorta and Manuka not to mention the best way would be to cut over the top to get across the short gully. Far from 1st time hunting fun. The decision was made to leave them be and take a few photos.
The hinds all looked in great nick but no fawns were seen over the day. Not surprising but Ive often seen fawns in tow during the day up here.

She did well. Regular stops and snacks made for a good day. Don't know if she could carry a heavy Blaser thou

    Good stuff James.

I'm sure your little girl was happy just spending the day with you.

    Cheers

How far/long are you walking her? My eldest just turned 8 and I don't think she would do more than an hour each way without sever wingeing.

Would have been lucky to be 40 min each way with stoppages.

Can not wait to be able to take my eldest out for a hunt. He is only 5 at the moment so the mountains are a yer or 2 off. But a forestry block is booked in a few weeks to knock over a few goats. Looking forward to it .

my kids were doing up to 12 km a day tramping when they were 7 & 9 respectively...(now heading for 9 and 11...) and when we reached huts they played for a few hours more!
I was pretty amazed, thinking I would need to wait years before they could manage that...
Anyway good stuff with your daughter!

    Nice, well done dad.
My youngest daughter surprised me a few weeks ago and walked up a local mountain. 420m above sea level, 1200 steps and an hour of solid grind and she was at the top full of beans. Mates have taken younger kids up there also so they are capable little people

If i could have a full time job shooting pests i'm up for over time.
