    Scouser's Roar 2017

Hi guys, heres my Roar report for last weeks trip to the Kawekas…..i had originally been going to my usual spot (Rushy’s Roost, Whirinaki) with my regular hunting buddy, but a family emergency but the kai-bosh on that….

Plan b was my old ‘goat buster’ buddy Carpe Diem, but he could not make those dates!!!!....now I thought about hawking my sorry arse around the forum hoping to get someone to feel sorry for me and invite me on their Roar….but that’s not on!

I had promised my missus 4 years ago when I took up hunting I would NEVER go hunting on my own during the Roar, so I was running out of options, then I remembered an invite last year from forum stalwart and all round GC, 7mmsaum…..

a quick PM and he was like “yeah mate, come on down and do some ‘real hunting’ in the Kawekas……SWEET

so sparra’s fart on ANZAC day and it was off for the 6 hour drive to Makahu hut and get my arse into gear……..never done Tops hunting before, but it cant be that hard eh?

Dropped all my shit off at the hut (just 5 mins from the carpark) and as the tops where clagged up, I went for a walk to Kaweka flats to stretch the legs, nothing seen or heard, but on the way back i heard the shrill of a male Kiwi quite close to the track

Tried looking for him with my head torch, but he was as elusive as the Sika, I was about to find out……

Next day was a pearler……”sunny as a dairy owner”…..up the hill it was then, fantastic views in all directions, met a young fullar on the way up with a BOW, I said “fuk, your keen” he replied “yeah, I like a challenge” FFS!.....gave out ‘single calls’ in about 5 guts, but nothing came up to play….on my way down around dusk, heard my first ‘HeeHaw’ away to my right

So off down there, set up in prone position, called back but nothing…….so off to the hut for my missus home made Beef stew and a couple (?) of ice cold Coronas…..now the beauty of this hut is that it has Cell phone reception, so I could text the missus I was safe and inform Andrew

Where I would be the next day in case I did not report in and my PLB had not been activated….this was the only way my missus was OK with it!!!!!!

Next day, it was off to the spur I heard the call the previous day…….got nothing from the spur, but on the way back, I called one in to around 70 mtrs (by sound) but he did not show himself…..BUMMER

That day, I had company in the hut, three local farmers with their daughters (easy….EASY) who were on a “Duke of Edinburgh” course tramp…they put me onto a spot along the bush line on the road in, so it was to there for day 4….struck out again…

Last day, as I had been given the weather report that Saturday would bring a front in, and hit the bush along the spurs hoping for a call, but nothing, oh well, not a single shop fired for two roars running (ill have to buy a Lotto tkt!)

So that’s it guys, just want to give a HUGE thanks to Andrew, otherwise it would have been no roar for me in 2017….good luck and be safe……”I’ll be back”……

Big feed of home made beef stew and ice cold beers......arrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!! great way to end the day.....

This is what i woke too every morning!!!!!....is this your 'artwork' Tobes?.. @Toby

While I might not be as good as I once was, Im as good once as I ever was!

    Good on ya fella!

Thought you had a partner in crime for this mission? We were away last weekend after Happy letting me tag along on his meat hunt down Whanganui ways which replaced the washout - literally we had the weekend Cyclone Cook paid a visit. Both ends of the road were closed so zero options there.

Fantastic Photo's and walking fella - no problem for you you seasoned mountaineer!

Will try and hook something for next year - just remember I can't do mid April 13/14th April pretty much ever, or my roaming license will be pulled by the SWMBO!

Glad to see the Beersies still managed to get walked in - what would you do without them. Maybe a Jami or Two??
    Loving your work fella!!

If it was easy everyone would be doing it and there would be no deer left.

Calling one in to 70m!!! You are close to tipping one of those sneaky Japs over

Love that 2nd pic with your kit laid out

A cold Carona after a long hot hunt Mmmmmm. I had 12 of them for this year and none came back unopened

Hang in there Scouser there is another one with your name on it

On ya Scouser. The road to the roost was fucked anyway. Couldn't get through because of massive slips between Murupara and TeWhaiti.

    I drove past Liverpool yesterday.What a Toilet.

"Why does the River Mersy, run through Liverpool?"
"Because if it walked,it would get mugged!"

Sadly I was on my way to Hull, which is arguably little better.

You had fun seen new country and got close, it should all come together soon. Keep trying those Sitka can be crafty.
