Thread: South Wairarapa opening weekend

The pond I shoot was holding plenty of mallards, so things were looking good for opening weekend. All The last minute jobs were done around the pond the Saturday morning before opening and another spot was checked out as well that was holding plenty of birds on the edge of lake Onoke. The three of us decided it was worth committing a bit of grain there and made a plan.



There was plenty of sleepless nights in the week leading up, but things were looking good. The bird numbers had doubled on the edge of lake Onoke by Friday to around 600 so we were now really excited.

Saturday was as fine as it gets with no wind which was fine by me, beats getting wet. We had a cuppa and went and got set up on the water.



We had shot our limit of parries and some mallards in 20 minutes and pulled the pin and headed back for breakfast. We spent the day sorting the birds out and getting organized for the evening shoot on mallards on the little pond we shoot. This pond only has birds coming in on the last hour of daylight, so they come in thick and fast.









It turned out to be a great weekend with 92 birds shot and 3 happy hunters!
