The wife is sick so that of course ment she wasn't working today, so i did what any good husband would do and organised a hunt while i had the chance.
Text up a keen young fella i have taken out a few times and he was keen as mustard.
The alarm went at quarter to two but i had been up since midnight anyway because Fuck it I am sick too.
Fit keen young Bugger turned up and we were off to spot x. Despite a pretty good forecast about half way up it was pretty bloody obvious there was no way any animal would be out in that wind.
We pulled the pin and walked back to the cruiser then drove out to his old mans to hunt the doc mismanaged native behind.
As we pulled up on the boundary still an hour before light the heavens opened and we could hardly hear ourselves talk in the wagon for the rain.
I thought to myself "if he thinks i am getting out of this truck before this shower passes he is sadly mistaken" fortunately he had forgotten any sort of water proof layer and reconed he would run back to the batch and try and find something. I said"youth got rocks in your head mate we will drive!"
Once at the batch he must have saw sense cos he suggested a coffee which i thought was the best idea he had had all morning.
Back at the boundary it was just starting to get light enough to almost see and into the dark wet bush we went.
He had a couple of clearings in mind which was all good but geebus i was alternating from as fast as my short legs can walk to a jog to catch up and so on for the next hour and a half.
As we ran threw the native i couldnt help but notice the odd fresh wind fallen tree and the sign around them but on we ran(well i did trying to keep up)
Eventually we made the clearings and strips with a nice pick of spring flush coming up threw the stale snow burnt grass.
This spot was deer or should have been deer mecca but while there was plenty of sign none of it was fresh..., the rough weather we have been having the last couple of weeks must have had them tucked up in a sheltered gully somewhere and feeding on windfall.
We stalked along me behind with my rifle slung on my shoulder (enjoying the break from the run)
There was sign of deer and pig rooting everywhere but all of it was old(a week or older) we got to the end of the sweet spot and had a bite to eat and a chat and discussed the sign we had seen.
I mentioned that most of the pig rooting was oldish and they only root at certain times looking for grubs or tubers and they may still be around but grazing on the fresh pick instead of rooting.
We headed back roughly the way we came but on a bit of a tangent.
Bit more relaxed now as is often the way and walking side by side i looked into a open bit and spyd a small pig grazing.
"pig!" i said as i unslung and cranked one up it.
Tho only 60 odd yards away the young boar was completely oblivious to the danger as he grazed the fresh grass starting to poke threw.
He couldnt see it from where he was so we stood side by side and lined up(me intending to be a back up shot if required) waiting waiting waiting Fuckin shoot already i thought to myself more waiting and i hissed "shoot it!"
"I can't see it very good my scope is covered in shit!"
By now i had been standing unsupported lined up for over a minute and was starting to wobble so risked creeping forward 15y to where i could take a knee and sent a 130grttsx fair in the middle of the brain box as it fed towards us.

Good mornings walk , coughed out about 3 cups of smoking tar welding fumes grinding dust and thick horrible phlem. Feel quite good now:)
