Swine time
The beauty of my current job is getting to work in some of the awesome locations around the Marlborough region. Often that provides the chance for an after work wander or fish. We've had a couple of clients offer the opportunity to hunt and it's been a great way to get work mates from different backgrounds interested in hunting and gathering.
The last week we've been working in the outer marlborough sounds and the opportunity to hunt pigs and goats. Smacking over some goats had been good fun but on our last night we decided to make a play for some porkers we'd seen lower down on the far side of the bay. Stalking around the track we put up a nice 60lb sow at close range but neither of us were quick enough and all we got were glimpses of our target pigs tearing off through the scrub. With darkness closing in and nothing to lose we pushed on to the next gully, immediately we spied the black shape of a pig only 100m away and set up for a shot. The wee grendel barked once and the pig was down. A short walk later and we were standing over an ancient crusty old boar with chompers to match! While I was busy staring at the best set of hooks I'd ever seen one of the other guys spied another swine back where we'd shot from. A quick shot from his 223 and we had two pigs down. The second boar was much younger but still had a nice set of tusks on him. Both boars were only 80-100lb but i imagine would've put up quite the fight with a pack of dogs. Can't really complain about where we live when you can be out doing this stuff on a school night.

Plurry Nora!!!! Those are naaasty dog injuring hooks. Hopefully your pork is ok eating.lots of apple sauce if roasting and just mince the rest up.pork mince from old boars still quite palatable.
-
I definitely wouldn't of wanted to be on the business end of them that's for sure Micky! The younger boars tusk were razor sharp to the touch. My old man's going to help me turn the meat into a batch of savaloys to hopefully mask any overpowering flavors.

Best off dead those things! Good work.

Amazing tusks. He looks a bit better than 100lb too my eye.
-
Marlborough wild pork is just about the best meat you'll ever eat . ...
-
I was bought up chasing those pigs ancestors and can safely say a youngish boar of 100-130 lbs id about the most dangerous thing out there. If our dogs got ripped it was always by a pig of about that size.
-
The tusks out straight line that just work.once get to curvey stage they not as easy to use, some big boars are indeed black belt at dealing to dogs but yeah the younger ones do most of the damage. You can be proud of them jaws.
-
Yeah those medium size boars are quick!
-
Both sets of tusks a pretty mean , would not like to be on the receiving end of those.

That is a absolute stonker , trophy jaw , I would of got that mounted
