Those large coastal Wairarapa sheep and beef stations have allowed the wild herds to build up to such a size that they are now becoming a problem. The deer I saw on Te Awawiti station were as numerous as rabbits, and the poor Angus were showing 3-4 ribs at the beginning of Winter Not flash. They need to make their mind up about whether they want to run a deer farm or a beef farm. The way it was operating when I visited, the beefies were not getting a fair go.
Of course they make good money out of American hunters.....who will not be coming for several years, all the while the herds go gangbusters.
I’ve no idea about American hunters or where they go. This place is certainly no trophy farm.
Animals were plentiful but this farmers stock were in top condition.
