I got to Spotters place nice & early this morning to try & find a stag we have seen a couple of times.
It was a stunning morning with no rain or fog to upset us like last time.
Off we go to spot X & Nek Minit, fog, fog & more bloody fog.....I guess winter is coming.......
We sat in the wagon & let the dog out & sat in the wagon & let the dog out, it will lift by 10 am apparently...
10 comes & goes & 11 & then just for a change we let the dog out again, we get the good old "bloody hell Boss what are we up to" look.
Then 11.30 shows up & what do you know the fog starts to bugger off reluctantly...about bloody time.......
We glassed & glassed & found a couple, the CRF1600 was on strike, it was just sulking because the hinds were 1441 away, a little far for it in the sunshine
They weren't in a great position so we continued looking, we found another one but it wasn't really what we were looking for.
In the mean time the first two had parked up hardly surprising at 12.30.
I could just see their heads through the spotter, but only because I knew where they were.
We moved to another spot & then I saw one which made a change as "Spotter" had found the others.
Then we spotted a stag, it wasn't the one we had been looking for but decided it should be culled, looked like a smallish head.
It was 885 yards away & 15 degrees up, I loaded a Gen II into the 338 Lapua improved, then dialled the elevation & windage adjustments.
The silence was shattered & I lost my sight picture, it seems to happen a bit when I'm lying in wet grass feild shooting up hill .......
I heard the impact then asked Spotter what the outcome was & he replied "he dropped like a stone" & " that bullet took a while to get there"
We grapped the dog & ventured up the hill, Spotter was so confident of the shot he didn't take his .223
Here he is as we found him, a nice size exit hole he has
So there it was, my longest shot on big game, the most points on a Stag & the second victim for the Improved after my GFs one last Sunday
