It was a miserable night out on the Wairarapa coast last night but my son-in-law was keen for a hunt so off we went. Its a 5 hour return drive and we got home at 12.30am.
Going for a hunt is a highlight of his trips down from Auckland, and he's shot 3 deer for 3 shots with me.
The southerly was blasting in from the sea but it didn't deter us and we did quite a big walk with lots of detours getting the wind right and sussing the sheltered spots. My 'phone said that we walked 18.8 km.
It rained most of the time and the mist was right down too. But when it cleared from time to time we did get a bit of a look around, but we mainly stalked the clearings.
At about 6.30pm Tilly was winding up a track and a quiet stalk took us within 20 yards of a young sow which SIL shot in the neck with my 7-08.
Later in the evening I left SIL to see if I could find a deer for him to shoot and I left him at a look out telling him to shoot whatever came out so long as it wasn't a hind. I hadn't left him long when I heard a shot - he had missed a yearling at about 180 yards. Oh well, shit happens. So we trudged back to the truck but at least we had a piggy on board.
