    Wallaby wander with Happy Jack

Got a text from Happy Jack saying he was in the area for a couple of days and had time to get out for a hunt. With my freezer chocka I decided to take him up the hunter hills to do some wallaby shooting.
Drove to the top of Mt Studholme, a spot I'd never been to for a look. Glassed for a while and met a few other people out enjoying the veiws and sunshine although a cold cold easterly was making it a bit chilly.

Not seeing much and going against Micky Ducks advice of where to look we moved along the ridge and did some more glassing. Only 5 minutes at this spot Happy saw a deer sneaking into a small gut below us but although we looked for another 20 minutes or so we never saw it again.
A couple of wallabies were seen here and there but most were out of range with the strength of the wind.

Another couple of moves across the ridge still didn't produce any decent numbers of wallabies so we moved to another area and immediately found an area speckled with these rodents we were looking for. Moving quickly down the ridge we got to a point within range of around a dozen animals.

With Happy finding a spot through the tall tussock he lined up on one of the closer mob of 4 around 120 metres below.
With the light quickly fading he fired but it looked like a possible miss. Now normally a shot spooks the surrounding wallabies a bit but not here, these ones were fully trained and all took cover immediately, something I've never seen before. My .223 was semi ready for a shot but these ones didn't stop once moving.
A bit more glassing hoping something would re-emerge saw the light fading until we were forced to pack up for the day. The trudge back up the steep hillside was paused with a couple of rest stops to catch our breath. Finally at the truck we made our way home, nothing really to get too excited about but still a good afternoon out in a new area with good company.
