Watching them grow, & some must go...

I was out for a hunt last night and saw a goodie which I left for someone else (my sons? me?). Got some nice vid of him which I will edit and post some time.

So I left him to it and carried on hunting, but about an hour later I looked back with my binos to the same spot and another common phase buck had appeared. He was younger and looked like a nice meat taker. I left him be for a while but in the end decided to loop back and try my chances on him. By the time I got to a shootable place he was well out from the scrub. 250 yard shot.

The 300 saum dispatched him nicely.

I saw a few reds too, but nothing exciting.

(somehow there is a rouge pic at the bottom of the page)

Aye those SAUMs must hit hard - there’s big patches of blood splattered all over that tree . Good to see that other buck left to spread his genes around.

@nor-west Deer was quartering away. Hit mid way along its side to angle through to shoulder. Projectile came to rest just under the skin where its sitting in the pic. I dug it out with the point of my knife.

@Gerbs Which one? The wooden handle knife is a Cross Knives "Nessmuk" in A2 steel. The canvas handle one is a Bark River "Blackwater 2" in Elmax steel.

Both available from Knives Shipped Free in the States

    Nicely palmated that Buck.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

That Melanistic buck could be one of the better ones taken in NZ if left to age a few more years.

It is now, no where near ready to shoot if your after a decent head.

    Has a little potential tho.
