This week, Kaimais and a trophy goat

Thursday: I came down from Auckland stopped by at my mates farm in Waihi to shoot some goats instead of heading out for the planned deer hunt in the Kaimais because I was a bit apprehensive about heading out in the bad weather by myself. I'm still gaining my off-track confidence. I found a couple and got a shot off at one from a decent distance (wanted practice) but couldn't connect. Oh well. Carried on down the line to my mates house in Whakamarama to crash at his place.

Friday: I planned to spend this day in the kaimais for deer but I woke up to a flat tire! Which wouldn't have been the end of the world but I couldn't wait to Sat to get the tire fixed to head back to auckland because the mechanic wouldn't be open, I didn't think. So I dropped the flatty off at the mechanic and he said he was closing up at 4.30 so I had until then to have a bit of a deer hunt. A bit pissed off that I had thrown the morning hours away and wouldn't be able to stay for the evening hours. But anyway I went for a bit of a stalk around not too far from the road end. Saw some pretty fresh sign but wasn't able to find anything. I guess at that time of day they'd be deeper into the bush chilling out in the shelter and not feeding? Had a look at the blades of grass that had been grazed they didn't seem fresh, they had the browning where the cut was. After I got back and sorted out the new tire etc my mate's neighbor, me and my mate headed back up to that farm in Waihi to shoot some goats on dusk, and it was bloody awesome!!!!! We bombed up I think 8 in the end in a short 5 or 10mins. It was great fun. One of them had a particularly nice head that spread 30inches! Check out the photo (not my kill unfortunately, but I happily pose with it ) The neighbour did some measurements and reckoned it scored about 100DS. I came back to Auckland on sat morn for work. All in all, though I was really after a deer, it was a wicked time. Never bombed up goats like that before. My camera battery died but I asked my mate to send me the photos so if he remembers (he's a bit slack like that haha) I'll post them up on here. The photo other photos are just from the crappy camera on my phone.
