Westcoast Tahr

My old man has attempted to get himself a good bull many times, he's even managed to succeed on two occasions only to be thwarted by terrain or weather on the recovery. He's just ticked over to 70 and is still fit as a buck rat but carrying heavy loads is starting to become a thing of the past.

So a plan was hatched for an early rut hunt over the coast but weather put paid to those plans. A November hunt was then schemed up, we arrived the day after the big rain and Ken from Heliservices whisked us up into the hills.

We had a testing 3 days living in the clouds but still seen plenty of animals in the clear breaks. We seen two great bulls on the first day but they were never seen again. We had several chances at younger bulls in the 12" class but the goal had been set for a heavy old bull so they were left alone. In true west coast fashion we were completely socked in on our last day so couldn't do any meat gathering and all too soon the 500 arrived to pull us out.

Although nothing hit the deck it was a bloody good trip, Heliservices were easy to deal with and Ken's local knowledge was very helpful. Those guys will be feeling it with the road closure so if you're interested in a tahr or chamois hunt this summer then given them a yell.

Great photos. And a great trip by the sounds of it - as we all know, success is not always measured in horn length.
