Yeah. I start thinking about it as soon as I shoot a deer and I always turn them down hill and stick them to bleed out. You will then find if you do that, if you cut the main artery in the hip when taking the back wheels off blood doesn't gush all over the show.
Clean pillow cases for the meat and keep everything off the ground. Only ever skin and cut from the inside out.

Then after its home and chilled I trim all of the silver skin with a thin boning knife. I would rather waste a bit of meat than leave hair or dirt on it. I never put water near it.

Sometimes it s a bit grubby when I get home from a wet hunt but its amazing how it comes up after a good trim. The dog lives on deer trimmings.

Mate. I have to drive 3.5 hours minimum to get to my spots and I am yet to shoot a deer. Fallow 5 minutes from home would be a dream

This particular deer was shot on a private scrub block with my son. We carried three sets of hind quarters and six back steaks for an hour or. It was well earned by anyones money.

Ive never paid to hunt deer in my life.
Were the private land access family friends etc or chance encounters with approachable people? I have had good luck with goat shooting but haven't tried to get access to deer yet.

I farmed in the area for 20 years.
The odd other contact through friends and mutual sharing.

I have never door knocked or directly asked for access. Its just not me. Works for others and that's ok.

I agree. I moved my family to Northland for the fishing and diving opportunities despite it being a bad career move (more to life than working!?). My interest in hunting was rekindled after the move

That's a choice looking cut of meat Bruce, you sure earned it, it does make it taste better after a hard haul. I like Red deer the most, you get a decent size steak and it has awesome flavor. Fallow is good too.

Your driving too far. Try the kaimais near Matamata. It's a 2 hour drive.
