Love your motivation. Always out there doing it instead of complaining about things
Balanced diet!
:-)
That's a nice looking meat you have there.
theres Tilly the wonder dog...out in all weather saving your bacon as always.....and I agree 100% it IS what its all about.
Beautiful
Your right on the money with that title better still you are there doing it,well done still life in the 2 old dogs
Yes indeed!
Looks like winters not slowing you down well done
Yes, this is what its about for many of us.
Oh to live out of auckland and have private land
Nice work Tahr, bet it takes a lot of practice to get your back steaks so clean of deer hair!
Haha mate all good i have all the fallow i want 5 min from home but we are not all that luckley
Yeah, I hear a lot of that. Ive done my hard yards of commercial hunting on public land and still hunt it. Ive also got some good farms that I have access to. You build your own relationships and make your own luck. It takes a life time. For me, nearly 71 years.
This particular deer was shot on a private scrub block with my son. We carried three sets of hind quarters and six back steaks for an hour or. It was well earned by anyones money.
Ive never paid to hunt deer in my life.
Yeah. I start thinking about it as soon as I shoot a deer and I always turn them down hill and stick them to bleed out. You will then find if you do that, if you cut the main artery in the hip when taking the back wheels off blood doesn't gush all over the show.
Clean pillow cases for the meat and keep everything off the ground. Only ever skin and cut from the inside out.
Then after its home and chilled I trim all of the silver skin with a thin boning knife. I would rather waste a bit of meat than leave hair or dirt on it. I never put water near it.
Sometimes it s a bit grubby when I get home from a wet hunt but its amazing how it comes up after a good trim. The dog lives on deer trimmings.
Very nice but still prefer fallow....

I'm somewhat sympathetic to that, but...
I agree. I moved my family to Northland for the fishing and diving opportunities despite it being a bad career move (more to life than working!?). My interest in hunting was rekindled after the move :oh noes:
I add 2.5 hours to that!
That's a choice looking cut of meat Bruce, you sure earned it, it does make it taste better after a hard haul. I like Red deer the most, you get a decent size steak and it has awesome flavor. Fallow is good too.
Yep, keeping hair and rubbish off your meat comes with practise, and mostly with age cause the hair gets stuck between ya teeth, older n wiser.
Nice, the mutt looks a bit wet
Sorry @Tahr, that was for you, I aint got any teeth. :D
Thar, I'm liking your enthusiasm but for god sakes shoot them at a respectable time of day when there is still enough light to butcher and carry out.
Well done Tahr ,I haven't been near "Snee" rd since before Easter but my last three reds came from the Ruahine Range on public land and fluked a couple on the Manawatu river as it was a mad dash back home to get the rifle.
@Dundee Great that you are getting some time to yourself for hunt .That's cool that they were on the river. They are getting to be all all over the shop, eh. There's plenty around Snee Rd except where you go is getting popular. Ive seen it on a couple of YouTube hunting vids recently.
@Rusky Ive always been a bugger for hunting 'til dark and getting out late. Quite enjoy it. The modern head torches are great, and Ive always got my PLB on my belt. Always let one of my lads know where I am and what Im up to too.
I have never had any success bush stalking them. Been up wairere and te tuhi.
Will try te aroha or a few spots around there.
Been plenty of times in my spots where I could have shot but didn't know the range so let them go. That's no longer an issue as I bought a range finder. So now it's just an issue of getting out hunting.
Nice work yet again @Tahr!
Each time i go in there im seeing more and more people-it must be included in one of those spot x books or something. Have heard that one of the bivy's features on a youtube video-yet to see it myself though and can't find the video.
Nice! Made me want to go straight out. Unfortunately, nothing in season here now...
