I had the same journey to a red dot sighted 308, albeit with a Henry single shot. I wanted something less affected by rain for bush hunting, and my 55 year old eyes couldn't cope with open sights, so a skinner receiver sight was next. Ok on the range, hopeless in the dark parts of Pureora. Next up the red dot off the drilling... perfect! The other part that you don't see until you do it is that carrying a rifle that isn't wearing a scope is a delight - much easier to wrap a mitt around the receiver that way.
