It's time for a new to me vehicle soon. I'm after something for rough roads and day hunt type parking spots,weekend hunt rough camping area's and family wagon up for camping and long road trips etc. Pretty much narrowed it down to the two vehicle types in the title.
Just after any opinions for and against these vehicles.
I wouldn't put either in the rough road category myself.

Yep i'd go with whatever model Landcruiser Prado fits your budget. I run an old '96 Prado 3Lt diesel as my hunting truck, it gets along plenty well enough on the open road when i do longer weekend trips away out of town for private hunting trips with family. Quite surprising where the old girl will go off-road too, I just run a set of aggressive AT tyres which are well mannered on road too.Quote:

I love my old truck, I run it as a daily driver too now and after quite a few years of having nice euro cars, I must say I really enjoy not stressing about anyone opening their door into me in a carpark or whatever.
It does everything i need it to do pretty well, without having a bunch of $ tied up in it, hard to go past the old Toyota.
If you don't do your own maintenance go for the Ford, most mechanics don't like exotic makes (like Jeep) and sourcing parts won't be as easy. The territory will handle most terrain you'll realistically cover, the diesel engine and 6 speed auto gear box is fantastic.
For something that does great on road, handle the rough stuff, and be great for camping and the kids in that age range, a Land Rover Discovery 3 is a fantastic vehicle.
Don't want to be paying someone else to fix it though (which you inevitably will) not to mention buying parts locally.
I wouldn’t buy either but if I had to choose it would be the ford. Some better suited more reliable maintenance friendly options out there.
Pretty much came down to the amount of boot space, Territory's and Grand Cherokee's have larger cargo area's than other options, plus have the horsepower for overtaking if needed.Quote:

Ive owned a jeep wk - 2008 crd in the past and was a weapon.. drove way nicer than any cruiser or patrol and the 3l merc motor is great.. had a few issues i had to sort, but what car doesnt...
Id buy another, we sold it as it was to small in the boot..
None, look at a 120 series Prado.

We bought a territory a couple years back when we were shifting as we needed an extra tow vehicle. Its a very nice vehicle to drive, drives like its on rails. But, it is the most gas guzling-est thing Ive come across in my life. We have still got it as its still a handy extra tow wagon and staff use it to travel from home to the dairy shed but I need to save up for 6 months first every time we need to take it somewhere. Its as if someone took an XR6 driveline, added 4wd, and put it in a 4 tonne chassis....oh, wait...
They made a 2.8L diesel, which helped on that front. Was a real popular rep car over here in the Ag game. Reps loved them but they got a bit loose and squeaky around the 150k mark from bouncing around on outback roads.
there is a reason they hold their price so well, very reliable, good resale at what ever the Ks, drive well and are not too heavy on servicing costs, Jeeps and Territorys not so much, Jeep known to be one of the most unreliable, and nothing but suspension problems with a teritory, thats from owning a workshop for the last 30 odd years.And I am not a big Toyota fan but they are hard to beat.Quote:

And here's me with a pre 2000 Patrol with 4.2Turbo D @ 10L/100km, 15L when towing the horsefloat. And about to tick over 500,000km. Just goes and goes. And a BIG step up in comfort etc from the GQ SAF's

The engines keep going but it's the electrics shitting themselves after about 20 years that put me off.

Wouldn’t worry about the electrics in the older ones, yes maybe some caps need replacement but once it’s done it’s good for another 20 years
If you go diesel terry then make sure it got good service history and check of rust around gearbox x member mounts
And don’t leave battery disconnected
4l terry as others have said good towbar with tanker behind
Wouldn’t even touch the other one

Maybe get something new with a warranty

The biggest cost saving to be had working on LRs yourself is buying the parts from the UK, can get genuine or OEM parts landed here for 10-50% of the cost they are locally.
I fixed a locals guys D3 with a suspension fault as his local garage couldn't fix it, when I asked him what codes it was giving he said the garage hadn't plugged a scanner in......
Plugged my one in, told me a sensor was playing up, confirmed that by looking at the live data when driving it, bought a new sensor, installed it in an hour or so, and it was fixed.
I don't have any first hand experience but the territory should be thirstier than a falcon, especially the 4x4 version and town driving.Quote:

Both the 2.7 diesel and 4.0 petrol have gone into a lot of other cars so there is plenty of info out about them both.

Most newer 4wds are plastic fantastics IMHO, Territory is a higher Falcon with AWD, and the earlier Territories loved dumping antifreeze through the trans, ruining it, and even the Highlanders I think may only be AWD too? And yep you pay "Toyota tax" for a reason..you can trust them if they have been looked after. like the Jeeps but the 3.7 V6 like to drop valve seats in to the cylinder causing disaster, and the 4.7V8 is similar. Anything euro will have you maxing the credit card if the trans goes (which it will) especially VW ..Mitsubishi Pajeros I honestly know nothing about, same with Nissan Pathfinders.
Seems hard to get a decent "tough" 4wd after year 2000 for under 15K and in petrol, any suggestions, post em up.
VW/Audi have their share of trans issues regarding certain DSG gearboxes but most ZF gearboxes seem to have good reports.Quote:

The 6hp26 im D3 has 300,000kms on it and is bloody fantastic, I did an oil flush about 10,000kms ago which improved performance dramatically.
Doubt it's what you'd want but petrol Discovery 2s are well under 15k and are pretty nice vehicles considering the age. Some folks have horror stories about the D2 but we have two in the family and both have been great.
Fuel economy isn't great, I average about 14l/100km when not towing and 16l+/100km when towing.
My biggest complaint would be it feels like the vehicle needs another gear to smooth out the gaps between them when towing on big hills, a 5 speed manual V8 would be sweet but are uncommon. Parts are cheap and they are easy to work on, other than replacing the coil packs which is a real bitch of a job.
I've always wondered about those spindly bars hanging down from Territory suspension.
Often sat behind one in traffic and thought "If I were to put something in the best place to have it smashed by a rock, that would be where I'd put it. I wonder if it really needs those things?"
