70 series - what mod or what mod NOT to get

Just wanted to share my new pride and joy, not my intention to poke anyone or show off

After 20+ years of working hard, I finally took the plunge and bought my own car that I actually liked,
Not for work, not for family nor for anyone, just for me and my wee buddy :) :).

ex 70's owner or current owner, would you kindly share some mods intel?
I'm looking for an adjustable (height) towbar for a low-rider plant trailer, any suggestions?
a better sound system, any suggestion?

A few mods coming this week,
seat covers, cargo tray and dog liner for my wee buddy to make a mess on,
Flim, cup holder tray, pull out cup holder weather shield and bonnet guard.

what's next should I get?

Not planning to install or change the wheel, bullbar, radio, roof rack, bumper, winch.

lights front and rear LEDS roof mounted best - cant beat lighting up where you are going and for loading in back etc but yup lotsa lights

Really depends on what you want to use it for? Plenty of info on the aussie forums for these they fking love them. Check out 4wd/24/7 on youtube theyve got all the bells and whistles going on and go indepth on budget systems. If its an auto an upgraded trans cooler is an easy insurance investment along with a pre fuep filter with a water alarm. Id be looking at a snorkel set up also even if you dont plan on water crossings it helps pulling in clean cool air to your motor.

Weekend driving, fishing, towing trailers and maybe hunting when I don't work as much,
Only manual trans available for this model,

That sounds like a plan, will try to find an installer near me who could do it without bullbars or a roof rack

That looks like a nice tidy one.

Dont get the tune. You dont need it.

A sport exhaust will help free up things.

Spotlights. The factory lights are ok, but spot lights help heaps.

Seat covers. I think mine are black duck or something. The aussies have a neat little tray that goes around the gear stick and sits on the tran tunnel.

Hoe many kms has that one done ?? Look after it, change the oil often ( My service interval is 5000kms)

Oil filter every time. Fuel filter every second. G/box and diffs every 25k kms. Air filter as required.

@amlnz has spent a LOT on his one...pretty sure there isnt much he doesnt know about them...

Full service and quality fluids throughout - diffs, trans, transfer case, brakes and clutch as well as engine and fuel filters. Also, if it hasn't got them fitting extended breathers to all gear cases and running them up somewhere high. I ran all of mine up to the highest spot I could get under the bonnet, I did a bit of a different approach to most and ran the rear diff forwards along the right hand chassis rail and used t-port or three way hose tail connectors to connect the breathers for the transfer case, transmission and front diff (I also ran one to the PTO winch). That left just one vent position under the bonnet, and I used a small inline fuel filter pointed down with a 90deg connector at the top. Worked well and didn't end up with the lovely diff oil smell in the cab.

as it has snorkel make sure it has dif and gearbox breather extensions if you intend to do any river crossing etc.
So many people do the snorkel but let the diffs drown.

I have had a couple now and two most important things is a catch can and a secondary fuel filter.
The catch can will prevent your intake getting clogged up. If you look into the price of replacing injectors you will see why a secondary fuel filter can save you alot of $ potentially.
I got a new one a year ago and have done the above plus 3 inch exhaust with egr and dpf delete with a remap. Front facing snorkel hat too.
Have also done a break controller and Andersons plug for the caravan.
Can't justify the $ to spend any more atm but next will be a decent snorkel and airbox Attachment 235062

A lift and decent tyres should get you most places

Check to see if the snorkel is sealed well, have heard the factory ones are more for getting fresh air above the dust as opposed to actually water tight for river crossings, dunno if it’s true, just what I heard. Doesn’t hurt to check.

Quality car audio in Chch for sound systems, good fullas. Also Manawatu Sound Hub in palmy, but there’s gotta be a good one in Auckland. Alpine for good gear.

I have a seat cover and that little tray that goes around the gear stick coming this/next week,
Tint (FM7) is booked for Friday.

Done 30 km so far,
Good idea to get the oil replaced at 5k before Toyota service is due (10k), especially for a new engine
I hope my mechanic neighbour knows what oil to use.

Sound system, depends what you enjoy. I'd say you can fit 6x9 speakers in rear doors and 5.25 or 6" ones in the front doors, which may need risers/stand-offs to fit. You'll also want to run proper speaker wire as the factory stuff is the bare minimum gauge to make noise.

A standard head unit is only going to be putting out 50Watts per corner so ideally you want 1 or 2 amplifiers in there depending on what line level outputs your head unit has.
I find USB a damn handy thing, can fit about 60,000 songs on a little memory stick. But if you have music on your phone then you'll want bluetooth or Ipod connectors.

Depending how serious you're going to get, or how prepared you want to be, onboard-air or a decent 12V compressor. Some people would add a wash-down pump, It's always nicer if you have to do trackside repairs on things that aren't caked in mud and dust. Doubles as a 30 second waterblast-shower for you and doggo if you get caught out.

Snap, Im sure your mechanic man is up to the task. but just in case the engine needs 15/40 Diesel engine oil. I use Castrol Vecton. I get Toyota to do the 25k services with the diffs and g / box. 100k km service all fluids including radiator, brake and clutch etc.

If the truck is brand new take it to the Toyota workshop. The services arent that bad and you want to keep your warranty up. Ive never had any issues with a claim but they cant baulk if youve had it with them the whole time. Get the extended five year warranty. Its only a few hundred dollars more.

Ive had two warranty claims with mine. Front diff crack in the shock mount area LH side. New diff housing. (Poor weld and design)

Floor mats in the front eyes pulled out. Oh, and a battery didnt go five years so got a new one of them too.

Plus if you take it to toyota youll get software upgrades if theres any as well

Don't trust the factory snorkel with water, you'll see they have a join at bonne height, this join isn't watertight.

Look into soft mounts for winches, all you need are two rated hookup points for the shackles and then a narrow drum winch on a mounting plate with two soft 2ton slings and a power supply anderson plug. If you put the power supply and two hooks at the back you can winch from both ends - a massive advantage over a front mounted winch that often only pulls you further into the crap before you start getting out...

is it brand new?

Bit of a dumb move that considering the electric options aren't rated to ford anything. Water crossing as a requirement means they won't be an option and the other Toyota engine offerings are not as interesting for towing duties. Getting back to having to go to a light truck as the better option!

Their putting the 2.8 turbo D motor and auto box from the Hilux in them.

I'm not too worried if it voids the warranty. I don't expect there to ever be a problem with the truck as they are tough as. Asides I refuse to take my truck to the turkeys at the dealership to service. I take it to my trusted mechanic

Well thats stupid. Makes the hilux a better option... The point of it is that a light truck runs anything up to 16L/100Km, way more fuel burn. Yet purchase price gets more attractive with the stupid tax so the climate loses. Awesome.

But that does make the current 70 a bloody desirable beastie!

I've had a few, highly recommend ARB Old Man Emu suspension. Makes it drive a bit more like something designed after 1950.

He cant because it a new truck and that will no doubt void warranty, as soon as the warranty is over there's a whole heap of mod's you can/should do but modifications that are allowed with warranty will be bugger all if any i would say

These trucks are not immune from engine / drive line issues. I’d run it std for a while and see what I really needed to change for my own use pattern. No point putting 20-30 k in and finding it’s not giving a great return and voiding a warranty. Better rubber might be a give me on the next tyre change.
